Prices to consumers for regular and homogenized milk in La Crosse increased by one cent per quart. Clarence Betz, president of the La Crosse Milk Dealers association, cited higher basic milk prices and an elevated producer premium as the driver, with a sliding scale keeping some costs absorbed by dealers.
In Trempealeau circuit court, Milan Herman milk truck driver was found 100 percent negligent after a crash that killed Josephine Wolfe and injured the Snyders. The jury awarded $18,226.75 to the plaintiffs, with Wolfe’s widow receiving $12,034.74 and the Snyders $6,192.01 for medical and pain damages. The case names employers and insurers among the defendants and hinges on driving on the wrong side. The trial followed by a separate assault case heard by Judge Beilfuss with Arcadia residents involved.
A three-car collision on Highway 9 near Waukon Iowa injured four people and claimed the life of Thomas Tierney 31. His wife Mrs Tierney 27 and their son Patrick 3 were among the injured as was Paul Unterberger 24 and George Becker 19. Tierney died after arriving at the hospital. Becker suffered serious injuries and was moved to a Rochester hospital. Mrs Tierney and Patrick remained under observation with x rays pending.
Federal agents pressed fronts to nip offshoots of a plot to kill President Truman after the Blair House attack. Griselio Torresola and Oscar Collazo were killed. Collazo’s accomplice and others faced questioning. Subpoenas issued as a grand jury probe looms in New York.
The United States moves toward producing specialized atomic weapons and tactics for Western Europe defense. The Air Force notes it is taking necessary action to develop support capabilities for ground forces with atomic weapons. The Army reports new guided missiles and recoilless systems in development.
The La Crosse common council committees approved budget proposals totaling 3.248 million after cutting 42,210 from department requests. The library budget passed at 70,899 but a new librarian salary plan may raise it by 4,526. Sign purchases of 102 street signs at 19.50 each were approved amid anticipated cost increases.
Allied forces fought a drenching rain to rescue remnants of two U S regiments along the Northwest front, while Chinese and Korean Reds counterattacked, pushing the UN line back. Reports from Unsan and Chongchon sectors described corroding advances with 13 U S tanks captured and a very serious situation as U N airpower was curtailed by weather.
The UN General Assembly backed Secretary Acheson’s veto-free collective security plan with 52 votes to five, two abstentions, aiming to deter future aggressions like Korea. It calls for a world peace patrol, emergency sessions on 24 hours notice, and training of UN-ready military units.
Tokyo dispatch reports a UN spokesman calling the Unsan Onjong engagement a large scale enemy defensive action not a counter offensive. He cites 13 American tanks captured and notes NK strength at an upward revised 26 000 with 336 000 total casualties by Nov 1 including 135 000 prisoners. UN forces still hold the initiative though facing stronger resistance.
Doris Schaller and John Dorsey, both teenagers, were injured in a collision on the Causeway at 10 38 p m Thursday. Shirleigh Jostad, 17, was driving the Jostad vehicle from Onalaska and Norman Hogden, 45, from Galesville, was in the Hogden car. Hogden received a speeding ticket. Jostad was cited for failing to yield. Damages were listed at about 450 dollars for Hogden’s car and 150 dollars for the Jostad vehicle.
Gate Way area commissioners' staff will review the status of Boy Scout units in La Crosse county at a 7 30 p m Monday meeting at the Chamber of Commerce office. Six new staff members will be announced at this gathering.
Five year old James Stane of 324 Copeland Avenue was taken to a local clinic after a cut under his left eye at 2 16 p m Thursday. Police reports state the injury occurred during a game with other boys and he was transported by police ambulance.
In La Crosse, snow showers began at 12 20 a m and again at 12 15 p m as forecaster A D Sanial predicted temperatures near 38 degrees with a fall to 26 by evening A 19 to 20 mph wind will make it feel colder and car radiators were advised to be checked. The day saw a noon humidity of 70 percent and a high of 42 degrees, five degrees above normal. Indian Summer lingered yet Friday with hints of a continued cold spell into Saturday and only slightly warmer Sunday.
Walt Disney schedules a Christmas day television debut featuring Mickey Mouse Donald Duck Pluto Goofy Snow White and the seven dwarfs. The parade of characters marks a landmark broadcast as Disney announces the special airing.
Five people died in a crash at the junction of U S 6 and Indiana 9 west of Kendallville. A man and a woman, plus a boy and a girl about six, were recovered from the car. The driver and another woman died near the scene. two wounded were hospitalized. The car and truck were bogged in a muddy creek bed and a crane was used to recover them.
Partly cloudy and cool tonight with temperatures 26 to 28 degrees. Saturday will be generally fair and cool with a high near 45 degrees.
Rice Lake Wisconsin arrest of Paul Brink a 40 year old department store receiving clerk on charges of breaking and entering with intent to commit larceny could solve a wave of local safe crackings. Brink admitted two other break-ins and a Thorp Wisconsin safe job last summer. Police found burglary tools shotgun shells and fishing tackle in his car as investigators press for more leads.
La Crosse supervisors push tentative budget of 1 174 409 27 for all purposes with total levy. No county employee salary raises yet as petitions await next week’s session. Evjen aims for joint talks with city officials to find common ground before increases, adding 42 275 to the budget if raises approved. Present: Evjen Christopherson Domke Riese Van Loon Warner Schneeberger Lund Hartwig Terpstra Brunke Schams. Bangor West Salem officials also attended. Rockford Holmen absent.
