A fog collision on Lake Erie between two lake freighters left one unidentified crew member dead. The victim was aboard the J. J. Boland of Boland & Cornelius Buffalo. Slaying Site Searched as 600 Pupils Seek Murder Gun
In Eau Claire Wisconsin 600 high school students searched the riverbank golf course slaying site for a murder weapon as a 32 year old man was brought back for questioning in a double sex murder. Authorities said Raymond Smith 18 and a 17 year old girl companion were shot Oct 23 with a .22 rifle and the girl was raped according to autopsy results. The suspect Johnson was arrested in Seattle on an open charge and extradition was arranged with Wisconsin officials. He described selling the rifle to a farmer from Mondovi Wisconsin for 20 dollars and planned a west coast trip, but later gave conflicting accounts. Detective Kenyon quoted Johnson as saying he hunted and sold the gun days before the killings.
