Hoary headed soldiers and children join in a march as veterans of two wars honor heroes who fell in battle for liberty. Flags and drums stir memories in a Civil War era style pageant with memorial thronging streets.
Veterans and students joined a multi-section parade from the Y M C A to Oak Grove Cemetery to honor Civil War heroes. After marching along King and Fifth streets, the procession decorated graves and heard a program featuring remarks by James Irish about the Civil War and its impact on the nation.
Memorial Day ceremonies were held at the high school and graded schools with two veterans from the G A R assigned to each. Colonel Osborne did not attend but George Wright spoke about Civil War adventures. An interschool track and field meet for eighth graders will be held at the high school track in two weeks with nine events and limited entries per school.
A major hail storm struck La Crosse yesterday afternoon, bringing torrential rain for about an hour. Water flooded basements, lightning damaged lights and telephones, and nine tenths of an inch of rain fell in fifteen minutes while rail lines reported no washouts. Some reports cited lightning striking horses and trees, but no serious damage. Farther east on St. J s Ridge, sun shone with little rain.
Los Angeles May 30 denial is issued of a reported pending deal between Standard Oil and California Oil Fields Limited for oil lands in California valued at 20 million dollars. The Rockefeller company is said to have backed the British group’s holdings at Coalinga and equipment. The two firms have operated the California oil fields together for about a month to form a monetary proposition.
Schaghticoke Country Club opened with a Decoration Day program on Schaghticoke Links. Members played nine holes in the morning choosing sides for lunch, with afternoon rounds totaling 27 holes for best individual score after handicaps, with cups awarded. A Mrs Smith dinner will conclude the day as spectators are urged to attend. streetcars will operate from 8 a.m. to the grounds.
In Harrison New Jersey on May 30 the jury in the murder trial of Theodore E Whitmore for the killing of his wife Lena reported they were hopelessly divided and could not agree. Judge Swayse sent them back to the jury room and later discharged the jury as Whitmore showed signs of nervous collapse.
In Canon City Colorado May 30 a pardon message arrived for George B Irving serving a Denver sentence for assault. His mother carried the pardon to his bedside but the warden said he died five minutes earlier. She collapsed in a hospital following the shock.
Mathew Monty, Genoa town clerk, collapsed at his doorstep while about to read his morning mail. He had appeared in good health at the post office earlier. He fell dead at his wife’s feet, was moved to a bed, and doctors will be summoned to examine the body.
Wausau Wisconsin May 30 The La Crosse and Wausau teams did not play here this morning. They will meet this afternoon, however.
Owing to wet grounds the game between Rockford and Fond du Lac was postponed this morning.
May 30 report from Smyrna says fighting around Vathy the capital of Samos favors the insurgents. Troops are expected to reach the island today to relieve the prince’s small garrison as islanders prepare strong resistance.
In Vancouver on May 30 a mob of about eighty Japanese enraged by a derailment killed Thomas Hughes, the Canadian Pacific freight train conductor, and caused the crew to flee. Warrants have been sworn for the ring leaders. Hughes was taken to his home in Revelstoke.
An up to date marvel hotel in La Crosse promises to attract a big patronage. Frank Kohn, proprietor, leads the swell Jefferson, touted as the best $2.00 breakfast house within 100 miles with twelve years of La Crosse hotel experience. Kohn, born June 6, 1868, on Jay Street, has spent 29 years in steady employment east of Third Street.
The record shows Kohn's career from cash boy to hotel steward under Clarence Dixon and Cameron House chief, spanning fourteen years in hospitality. Renowned for wide public acquaintance, he is affectionately known as a “live one” at home, with friends from city moguls to newsboys.
The home of Edward Laughan at 1447 Charles Street was struck by lightning about 3 PM yesterday. The roof sustained damage but there were no injuries reported.
Ash Spicer a Genoa to Trempealeau river guide and Singer boat livery veteran saved four people from drowning after their capsized boat struck a buoy near Pettibone park. Two girls Lizzie Bleedow Myrtle Kratz and two men Edward McKillip Mike Sampson were pulled into Spicer’s frail skiff. Captain W A Thompson aided with a larger boat to bring all to shore safely.
May 30 Boston crowds gathered along the Charles River for the annual Harvard Cornell boat race on a holiday with good weather. Both crews prepared with practice rows, while Harvard expressed strong confidence that defeating Cornell would be decisive for the season.
In New York May 30 Theresa Phillipot confronted John Marrio in a vacant lot behind her home as he allegedly attempted to maltreat her six year old daughter Emilia. She followed him and fired three shots striking him in the breast, killing him instantly. she was arrested.
Memorial Day in Chicago featured a ten thousand veteran parade and graves decorated for the soldier dead. City and county buildings were closed for the observance.
Leo C. Mueller of this city has passed all examinations at Annapolis and will enter the revenue service of the government. He will go to a training school at Baltimore and will later enter active service.

In Washington on May 30 1903 Senator La Follette ends a historic 18 hour 23 minute nonstop speech on the Aldrich bill after a nightlong filibuster. He is followed by Missouri’s Stone and likely Gore to continue the debate with Arkansas Senator Jeff Davis expected to join.
