A memorial service at the normal school featured Pen and Schweizer as speakers. Bronze tablet plans for the front hall were announced while the program honored students and faculty who served in the war, with President Cotton delivering a moving address about sacrifice, valor, and the human cost of conflict.
Forecast says tonight will be clear with light winds and low temperatures. Sunday is expected to bring sunny skies with mild highs and calm conditions across the region.
The La Crosse community honors Corporal Elmer Philip Schroeder and Corporal Selmer J. Simonson, both La Crosse natives. Schroeder died of wounds in France on September 30, 1918, and his body was brought home aboard a memorial procession cited by President Harding. Simonson, of Company C, 12st Machine Gun Battalion, died of wounds in action, with funeral in La Crosse and burial at Oak Grove cemetery. both families, including siblings and parents, endure the loss.
Memorial observances fill the city with events at Normal School and other sites. Women plan dedications on Sunday and a grand parade Monday honoring veterans, with services postponed for cemetery access due to rain. Community groups marshal pageants, and students recite patriotic poems and tributes in school programs.
Captain Eadie Rickenbacker, piloting an army D A 4 plane, left Chicago for Dayton at 6:55 a m and aimed to reach Washington by around two o'clock. He planned to change planes at Dayton and continue, with a refueling stop in Columbus en route.
Police say Lows Miller and Mrs Roy Miller were occupants of the Ford roadster that struck Mary Shillha on Mormon Conlee road Wednesday night. Mrs Miller pleaded not guilty to failing to stop and was released on 100 bail for examination on June 3.
Frederick Hankerson of La Crosse won the state oratorical contest at the University of Wisconsin Hicks school Madison on Friday. Ten young men competed in oratory while Marie Schneider of Sia lwano won the state contest in declamation. Ten girls also entered. Hankerson spoke on Toussaint L Ouverture. This is La Crosse’s first state win since 1909. Clarence Seldenstinner of Sieboy cin took second. Rea Johnstone Readsburg thin and France Stotions of Darlington and Floyrene Root of Milwaukee placed in declamation.
Florida grown watermelons arrive by carload in La Crosse on Saturday at Burns' fruit house. Priced at 75 cents each, the seasonal fruit finds buyers within minutes as Epicureans line up for the fresh produce.
Governor Wise is silent on the Matheson prohibition enforcement bill now before him. If not signed or vetoed by Tuesday it becomes law. Politicians split on whether Governor Signs or sends the bill back, with talks of possible amendments or replacement measures.

Olive Hawkins secured a circuit court verdict for the rest of her wages from George Bakas, a restaurant employer. The case, first tried before Judge Hunat, saw Hawkins appeal after being paid only 19 dollars for four months’ work in the lunch room. Her attorney is J Weber. Hawkins’s son also worked there.

The allied council of ambassadors has virtually approved a plan to create a neutral zone between German and Polish forces in Upper Silesia. London reports indicate the government plans stronger measures against Ireland's criminal element with military reinforcements drawn from foreign service. The Kleinertz case against Arnold closed Thursday with a special verdict. Judge Wickham will file a decision. Kleinertz claimed fraud over a farm deal on Third Street opposite the courthouse and West Avenue near Burr Oak. He sought damages of 5,000. verdict awards 1,004 for Kleinertz and 85 for a plumbing bill. The jury found Kleinertz not justified in relying on Miller and Arnold’s statements and noted the farm was not worth 12,000.
The Associated Press reports Berlin announced the first real payment of the German reparations account. The payment consists of 20 bonds valued around 10.9 million each totaling 86 million dollars, with 60 million payable in New York and 60 million in London and Paris, endorsed by the Reichsbank and major banks.

Federal alien property agents seized all Bergdoll assets in Philadelphia valued around 322000 dollars. Grover and Erwin Bergdoll related were serving terms in Leavenworth, and Mrs Bergdoll planned to appeal to President Harding to halt brokered dealings. The action followed a case involving Grover C Bergdoll, once a graft dodger, now in Germany.
A 25 year old woman, described as the first female tramp arrested in Northeastern Wisconsin, was taken from a train in Oconto. She wore overalls, claimed to be a waitress, and refused to name her Oklahoma hometown. She received a ten day jail sentence.
Washington dispatch reports the American Forestry Association urging picnickers to guard against forest fires and to leave woods as found as millions begin the first three day holiday of the season. The appeal closes Forest Protection Week proclaimed by President Harding.
Christian Prev, president of the Norwegian Lutheran college in Decorah and father of Minnesota Governor T. AVG Prev, died suddenly Saturday from heart trouble. The obituary notes his prominent role in Decorah's Norwegian Lutheran community and his as yet unnamed affiliations.
