A patchwork emergency currency bill passed the House 166 to 140 and heads to the Senate, where opposition from Senators La Follette and Culberson is expected. Democrats warn against filibuster, while a final defeat seems unlikely as a Senate vote nears.
Senator La Follette won Senate support for a five year inquiry into telegraph and telephone firms. The resolution orders the secretary of commerce and labor to investigate business practices wages and conditions noting past telegraphers strikes and looming threats of another.

Gen Luke F Wright denies rumors he was offered secretary of war if Taft is nominated. The Democrat, former governor general of the Philippines and ambassador to Japan, says he knows nothing of such a post and dismisses the idea as news to him. The tale is seen as a bid to win Democratic support for the Republican ticket and to break the solid south.
The joint railroad commission presented the New Haven Boston Maine merger bill to the senate. It allows temporary New Haven control of Boston Maine stock but requires railroad commission approval for transfers or rate changes. Prohibits outside interests from controlling Massachusetts railroads. Corporate violations carry fines up to 25,000 for individuals and 5,000 plus imprisonment for others. The commission must investigate and report by January 1910 on future stock actions.
Salem Oregon May Ross president of the defunct Title Guarantee Trust company was sentenced today to five years in the penitentiary. In addition he was fined 376858 in default of which he must serve 288000 days in Multnomah county jail. He was convicted of larceny of 290000 of school funds.
A Kansas City report notes a proposal to keep churches open every day of the year presented to the Presbyterian General Assembly. Strong support among commissioners suggests the plan may force a vote, as officials seek a settlement to avoid ongoing dispute.

Washington May 23 The president met with A L Vorys and Frank Hitchcock. Vorys said he would leave for Columbus and Chicago tomorrow to open headquarters. He voiced confidence in Taft's nomination and named John R Maller as convention secretary, denying Senator Dolliver was invited to speak.
Chicago May 28 The seats of about one fifth of the delegates to the Republican National Convention will be contested. The time and place for notices of the contest were not fully available in the fragment.
Washington May 28 Representative Fitz Gerald of New York leading Democrat on Appropriations denounced Republican extravagance and cited a proposed next year total of 1,608,504,894.57 dollars in contrast with 1865 during the Civil War. He argued rapid spending burdened future generations while Tawney of Minnesota warned of a conservative deficit outlook. The speech pressed that the nation is at peace with no external threat to justify the huge appropriations.
telegram received here today announces the death of Charles Tuchek, a La Crosse youth, who was burned in a smelter at Winthrop yesterday morning and died last evening. He was married and the son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Tuchek, 602 North Fifteenth Street. Body to be brought to La Crosse for burial.
A pedestrian injury occurred when John Hahn foreman at Chicago North Western machine shops in Winona Minn sprained his ankle and dislocated his shoulder after being struck by a ball in a yard game. He will be laid up for some time.
Washington May 21 The pulp and paper committee backs the tariff, urging Stevens bill passage but delaying positive legislation until next session. Republicans note small duties and large potential relief, while Democrats report caution on price impact and recommend free trade on pulp and printing paper. Chairman Mann presided as the house weighed findings from the print gas paper committee.
