A dense fog on the New Jersey Turnpike caused a 14 vehicle crash early today. Six people died including five at the scene and one at St James Hospital in Newark. About 10 others were injured, with one critically. Investigators cited fog as the probable cause while noting a truck driver from Port Huron, Michigan entered the wreckage.
Former Ambassador Joseph P. Kennedy aged 74 rested at his Hyannis Port home after minor weekend surgery and tooth extractions at Cape Cod Hospital. He is recovering from a stroke suffered 17 months ago in Palm Beach Florida. Dental skin growth removal completed by Dr. Samuel F Marshall.
A woman described as a little old lady in Wells ton police reports saw three men break into a supermarket by prying off a padlock. She placed her own lock on the hasp and called police. The three men, including an ex convict, surrendered.
The Most Rev. Edmund F. Gibbons age 94 oldest U.S. Roman Catholic prelate marks his 70th anniversary of ordination. He was ordained in 1893 in Rome and lives at St. Peter's Hospital in Albany. The day was described as quiet and routine.
Actress Arlene Francis was hospitalized in Manhattan after a wet pavement collision on the Northern State Parkway near Lake Success New York. Rose Arcos 34 was killed in the other car and Francis injuries include a fractured collarbone and concussion. no charges were filed.
Senators Dodd and Humphrey proposed a first step to halt atmospheric and underwater nuclear tests in a resolution aimed at pressuring the Soviet Union. The plan excludes underground testing and outer space tests and would require the Soviets to abstain before the United States limits its own testing. Dozens of colleagues from both parties signed on, reflecting a rare bipartisan push on a peacemaking approach amid ongoing treaty debates.
King Bhumipol Adulyadej and Queen Sirikit arrived in Tokyo as guests of the Japanese imperial family for a ten day state visit. The Thai monarch and queen will meet Imperial Household members and participate in official ceremonies during the tour.
A twin turbine USAF helicopter began its transatlantic journey from Otis AFB Massachusetts toward Le Bourget France with a first stop at Loring AFB Maine. The Supreme Court ruled unanimously that the 1955 Brown decision cannot permit indefinite delays in desegregation. Justice Goldberg urged immediate desegregation of parks and recreation facilities in Memphis while cautioning that schools require prompt action, not prolonged plans. The decision involved 11 Black residents challenging slow public facility desegregation and cites the need for the rights to be fulfilled without delay.
CBS The Defenders led the 15th annual television awards with five Emmys including outstanding actor for E G Marshall. The Tunnel NBC earned program of the year and best documentary while Piers Anderton won for international reporting. June Allyson received a posthumous Trustee Award for Dick Powell as Kennedy and Mrs Kennedy honored for Tour of the White House. Carol Burnett won for Julie and Carol at Carnegie Hall.

Victor Buschman of La Crosse died Sunday in a local hospital at 95. He led Spicer and Buschman Inc., once based at 123 S. 2nd St., and was famed for Broadway interest. Survived by brother Michael of La Crosse. Services planned at Hellwig-Morris and St. Wenceslaus Church. Burial at Oak Grove Mausoleum. Born Nov 16 1867 in La Crosse, he started in printing at age 12.
Spicer died in 1939 and Buschman published La Crosse Telephone Corp. directories since 1895. He created the first city directory in 1889, organized ads in three months, and later gained national attention through his friendship with Broadway star Mary Martin.
Fire swept through the Sweet Shop cafe and the Martz Furniture Co store in Leroy Minnesota causing about $100000 in damage. The blaze occurred Sunday night in the Money County village about 35 miles southeast of Austin.
Helene Lincoln also known as Princess Tomah is crowned by John Graf during Winnebago Days at Tomah Recreation Park. She is a sophomore at La Crosse State College and will attend University of Colorado summer session for sociology credits. Chief Roaring Thunder stands nearby as Tomah merchants present gifts including yellow roses. City Attorney Lawrence Clark greets the tribe on behalf of Tomah. Princess Tomah wears a deerskin gown with beadwork and moccasins.
