Rehiring of Blind Teacher Ordered
Richard Fischer, a blind teacher fired in 1972 after diabetes led to blindness, must be rehired by United School District 3 of Merrillan Alma Center and Humbird with back pay estimated around 45000 dollars. The ruling by the Wisconsin Equal Rights Division calls for a contract for the next available school year and reimbursement of denied benefits. Fischer’s attorney said the decision affirms his ability to teach safely at district standards except for behind the wheel driver education. Fischer, a former UW River Falls basketball star, taught biology physical education and an outdoor living class prior to the layoff.
