President Taft laughs at a botched cloudburst gag delivered by a staff member during a presidential sketch session. The performance, staged for the staff, aims to poke light at weather mishaps and political seriousness.
Wisconsin governor Robert M. La Follette defends tannery workers and tannery owners amid labor dispute. He argues for fair wages, safe conditions, and orderly reform to protect both laborers and industry in the face of agitation.
In Charlotte the Mecklenberg Independence Day parade was disrupted by a sudden cloudburst as President Taft attended the 134th anniversary event. A broken electric wire and a blast of wind drenched his hat and coat but he remained poised, later riding in a closed car to the Selwyn hotel.
John Orth of Painesville Ohio claims to be the missing Archduke of Austria and will submit an autograph letter for handwriting comparison. Aaron Ambrosey the Austrian charge d affaires says he will forward the letter to the Austrian foreign office for evaluation. Ambrosey remains cautious about Orth's claim but will not block any proof if offered.
In Paris on May 20 a serious clash occurred in front of the St Paul auditorium after a meeting of striking workers adjourned. Police patrols across the city have been doubled as both sides engaged in the confrontation.
Wm Adler, found guilty of wrecking the State National bank in New Orleans, was sentenced to six years in a federal penitentiary in Atlanta. He is said to own gold mines in Honduras worth millions of dollars.
J Allen Baker of the British House of Commons told the Lake Mohonk peace conference that the United States might intervene if armament threats escalate into war between England and Germany. He blamed Britain for fueling a dreadnought arms race and criticized sensational reports by the yellow press.
The house met briefly in Washington on May twenty with only five minutes of session. An attempt to vote Payne's motion on the Philippine tariff bill failed again due to no quorum.
In San Francisco on May 20 John Helms former head of the United Railways secret service bureau testifies in a bribery case linking Patrick Calhoun to city officials. Helms says he shadowed Burns and planned thefts of papers while Calhoun allegedly approved the actions. Heney warns he will defend himself against insults and mentions carrying revolvers.
Madison Wis May 20 The present law on exemptions from execution for debt remains unchanged as the Lyons bill to cut ten percent of a debtor s wages failed in the assembly The law currently exempts 60 dollars in wages and also protects tools libraries and professional instruments Other notable acts passed include a rest day for city firemen a tax sale notice requirement a Racine county judge salary of 3200 and Milwaukee four mill school tax plus daylight for legislative chaplains.
The Third Regiment announces its final camp session will be held at the usual training ground this week. Commanders urge adherence to schedule as troops complete last preparations before deployment.
The Third regiment will camp at Camp Douglas from July 17 to 23. First regiment camps June 25 to July 2, and Second regiment July 10 to 16. Recruits after June 1 cannot attend. Uniforms are standard service dress and camp routine is listed with precise times.
In EAIE Pennsylvania on May 20 Delmar Young's murder trial paused when key witness Mrs Norena Gillespie fainted upon being served with a defense subpoena and cried of threats by Young's friends if she testified. She collapsed in the witness room and later claimed persecution.
Nairobi May 20 Kermit Roosevelt saved the life of the chief beater on the Roosevelt Africa expedition by shooting a leopard that struck the native and attacked him. Kermit on horseback leaped down fired and killed the leopard as it sprang at him. The native recovered after his wounds were dressed.
Burglars broke into the rooms of James Garnett and stole $5 from a bureau drawer. Garnett, a night watchman, found the house empty during the evening. His room lies next to Drs. Powell on Second and Main streets. police were notified with no leads by late afternoon.
