A congressional contempt report accuses a member of using his office for private gain. The report by the house committee on submarine legislation clears Electric Boat and targets Representative Geo R Lilley of Connecticut. It finds Lilley used the inquiry as an instrument of rival Lake Torpedo Boat Co and acted in bad faith, violating his obligation as a member and showing contempt for the house. The document notes Lilley had no information to justify his charges before the committee on rules.
Congressman Lilley said he has not received a copy and will read it carefully with his attorneys before replying. He called the report’s reflections on his personal honor the most painful aspect, insisting nothing in his record justifies such remarks.
A legislative committee foxed Lilley for making baseless charges against Loud and the Electric Company, concealing key informants from the panel, and sending letters in Lilley’s name attacking house members. It also faulted him for not disowning a signature letter and for destroying a secretary’s note meant for Frank Edinbrough. The probe links his motive to defeating a naval appropriations clause favoring the Electric Company.
The funeral of Frank Retzloff who died by his own action at his home on 620 South Eighth Street was held this afternoon at Miller Bros undertaking parlors on Main Street. Interment followed at Oak Grove Cemetery.

Emery of the National Council of Industrial Defense accused Samuel Gompers and the AFL executive committee of lying about the anti injunction law at a National Manufacturers' Association meeting in New York. Lansing Mich May 20 The democratic state convention will endorse Bryan and instruct its state delegation for him. Johnson sentiment exists but is not strong enough to carry an unin structed delegation to Denver.
Jefferson City May 20 The state democratic convention meets this afternoon to endorse Bryan. An effort is underway to oust state chairman Evans, who seeks the gubernatorial nomination. No successor to Evans has been agreed on.
In Harrisburg on May 20 delegates argued over whether to instruct the state delegation for Bryan. Both factions claimed control as leaders agreed to debate the issue on the floor after the organization recess.
Vladivostok report notes Thomas, Protos, and Zust cars in the New York to Paris race left together from St. Petersburg on May 20. All are heavily armed and wagers rise as the unusual convoy moves toward the route.
Port Huron reports William L Wilson, treasurer of the United Home Protectors fraternity, convicted of embezzling 125000. The verdict follows an internal investigation and relates to financial misappropriations within the organization.
Washington May 20 Comptroller of the Currency issued a formal call upon national banks to submit statements of their condition as of the close of business May 14. The move seeks a snapshot of bank health across the country and will influence oversight and policy actions.
Jaroslav Prochaska faced circuit court after being bound over on charges of entering private homes of prominent residents with intent to rob. Bail set at $1000. Prochaska testified through an interpreter he entered homes seeking a German dentist for dental work. He said he earned $62 and recently arrived from Cleveland Ohio.
The river will rise slightly in the next 36 hours. Stage of water at 6.8 feet with a slight rise expected. Wisconsin forecasts showers tonight and Thursday, cooler this afternoon. Minnesota expects rain tonight and Thursday, possibly turning to snow in the west, with colder conditions in the south and west and high northeast winds. Extremes include Modena 32 and Dodge 96.
In Cleveland on May 20 the union officials rejected President Dupont and state arbitrators proposed settlement over a car strike. A peace proposal was presented. officials are not hopeful. Rioting resumed with three wounded as strike breakers, protected by deputies, clashed with protesters. A car was burned, a girl was killed, and authorities tried to restore order amid violence.
Alfred J. Smeberg sues Rev. M. C. Holseth for 5000 dollars over alleged slander in Norden Buffalo county in April 1906. Smeberg, a former Norwegian Lutheran school teacher in Norden, claims statements to church and school trustees damaged his reputation in Norden and Castle Rock. Testimony from Norwegians Nels Thompson Al Gilbertson and others clarified meanings of English words. Attorney James Thompson defends for the defendant. E. C. Higbee represents the plaintiff.
Notable young couple to wed in La Crosse on Tuesday May 26 with Bernard Dockendorf of Parkinson Dockendorff Architects marrying Miss Cora Kurtenacker of the Kurtenacker family. Ceremony will be by Rev H C Hengle, after which the couple will journey briefly and reside at 912 West Avenue South.
Frank Atkin as administrator of the McMillan estate sues the State Bank of this city seeking $2,000 alleging a certificate of deposit owned by McMillan was paid to Mrs. H. P. Baldwin by John M. Holley, bank cashier. The certificate was signed by Van McMillan and countersigned by Mrs. Baldwin.

In New York on May 20 the postponement of Evelyn Thaw's divorce hearing was reported to accompany a possible withdrawal of the suit. Attorney O'Reilly aims to obtain Thaw's will and other papers held by Justice Morschauser, with the case rescheduled to Tuesday for access.
