Southern Democrats push for an Eisenhower surge before Truman’s name is officially nominated. Eisenhower, president of Columbia University, cautions nothing definitive, while southern delegates and party leaders weigh drafts and unity moves.
Senate Republicans failed to bridge a racial dispute in the draft bill debate. Senator Russell and Dixie Democrats push for an amendment to allow draftees to serve with units of their own race, while GOP leader Lodge drafts a compromise to have service status decided by military secretaries. House rules panels resume hearings on a separate draft bill registering 18 to 30 year olds with a two year draft for 19 to 25 year olds.
A Wisconsin company and the division 23 bargaining committee of the Communications Workers of America announced three year deals after two and a half months of talks. State CWA head Arthur Le Fevre said there would be no general wage increase for about 10 000 employees, but two wage reopening periods are built in with cancellation if new wage agreements are not reached.
The weekly Hollandale Review is sold to Albert W Kirchoff of Water town by Mrs. Bert Day the paper’s long time publisher who died April 19 1914 report notes student involvement from the University of Wisconsin Journal.

AT&T faces a presidential wage inquiry, while Oak Ridge AFL workers are polled on Carbide and Carbon. Milwaukee breweries end a strike with a $6.80 weekly rise to $63.80 average.
A special meeting of the common council is set for 8 p m Wednesday to decide removing boulevard trees on East avenue from Farnam to Jackson streets and to authorize additional grading at the fairgrounds site. It will also determine if the East avenue curb and gutter contractor must be paid for tree removal. The council may approve removing an east side fence to expand the fairgrounds football field grading area.
New York The Mutual Broadcasting system will air Communist responses tonight at 8 30 p m CST to statements from Monday's Dewey Stassen debate They note no single speaker for or against the Communists in the Mundt Nixon bill discussion.
The House investigates commodity speculation in oleomargarine with Rep. Andresen citing Proctor and Gamble profits of 338 400 from cottonseed oil corners. Best Foods and Reeater and Gamble testify on tight supplies and a 21 percent demand rise. A mystery group is blamed for aiming to raise margarine prices ahead of a pending Senate repeal bill.
A plan by F. R. Schwalbe and Son to develop 52 Salzer airport plats into homes could begin in July if enough buyers join a group of 15 purchasing lots through the housing authority. The proposal includes FHA standard two bedroom houses costing about 9,770 with 1500 down and monthly payments 50 to 55, plus lot and sewer assessments.
Attorney General Tom Clark had to cancel his appearance at the Sunday luncheon of the state Jaycee convention. Senator Alexander Wiley will seek a replacement while Jaycee officials briefed the executive board on Saturday’s keynote setback. The event opens Friday with about 500 delegates from over 40 Junior Chamber groups.
Miss Florence Dolph of Scranton celebrated her 101st birthday with her annual bannister slide to breakfast calling the bannister her horse Pet. Despite a year of illness she appeared gay as relatives visited and the Pennsylvania Medical Society presented a plaque recognizing her age.
In Tel Aviv reports say Jewish fighters linked with defenders in the old city of Jerusalem after breaking the Arab siege, while Arab Legion forces ring the city with artillery and infantry. Jewish forces claim a major assault on Mount Zion preceded the fight for the Zion gate.
35 year old farmhand Herman J. Carstensen admitted killing Silas Paxton 59, a Wood county farmer, on Paxton’s Sigel town farm the night of April 18 after an afternoon of drinking. Carstensen told Dist Atty Herbert A. Bunde and Sheriff Arthur Berg he clubbed Paxton with the hardwood arm of a hay mower and Paxton ordered him off the premises. Carstensen was arrested near Wewauwega in Waupaca county and said he would be charged with first degree murder.
Wage talks between Brewers union local No 41 CIO and management of G Heile man Brewing company and La Crosse Breweries Inc continued Wednesday afternoon after a morning session that began at 10 a m.
Tass, the Soviet news agency, asserted new pages in the world history of inventions credit Russians with the electric bulb by Lodygin, the flashlight by Yablochkov, the transformer by Ussagin, and welding by Lazarenko. Moscow displays documents praising Russian origins for steel girders and other advances, adding to prior claims on radio radar, steam and jet engines, and penicillin.
A 14 year old boy fell beneath freight train wheels while attempting a bridge ride in Wausau Wisconsin. He suffered the loss of both legs above the knee and part of his left hand. He was reported in critical condition.
Sherman Hastings a 63 year old lamp lighter with the coast guard was injured in a collision Tuesday evening while returning from La Crosse to Prairie du Chien. His 24 foot inboard motor launch was struck by Pat Clements of Genoa. Hastings was wedged between the engine and gas tank and later transported to a hospital. Police reported a large gash on his back.
The city, with a growing surplus from parking meters now above sixteen thousand dollars, directs the board of public works to seek unimproved downtown land offers for off street parking. Proceeds pledged in 1947 will fund purchases including a lot near city hall to support civic uses and a future civic center.
Negotiations for a new soft coal wage contract broke down over whether Joseph E. Moody, president of the Southern Coal Producers association, could seat at the bargaining table. John L. Lewis and the United Mine Workers opposed Moody’s participation, prompting the SCPA to seek NLRB court intervention and threatening a broader walkout amid ongoing pension and injunction disputes.
