The trial of Sally Rubin for an April 9 fire at the W S Apartment Building will be Thursday. Municipal Judge Leonard Chojnacki ruled the city ordinance governing smoking-related fires constitutional and within his court's jurisdiction.
President Ford asked Congress for 25 million in disaster relief to aid Italy after the northeast earthquake. He directed VP Rockefeller to visit Italy for on the ground findings and potential further U.S. assistance. Officials report 914 dead and 400 missing with at least 80 000 homeless.
The City of La Crosse hosts its annual auction at 10 a.m. on Isle La Plume with a mink stole and two 1942 fire trucks among the sale items. Inspectons at the sewage treatment plant precede bidding. other lots include bicycles, automobiles, a fiberglass boat, coats, tape players, fire alarm boxes, fishing gear, gasoline cans and motorcycle helmets.
Ulysses Meredith Sr., 53, and his wife Louise, 51, of Douglass, were released on $2,000 bonds after appearing before U.S. Magistrate John McBride on two counts of income tax evasion. They were indicted by a federal grand jury for allegedly failing to pay taxes in 1970 and 1971.
La Crosse County advances a plan to merge the sheriff and traffic police departments after a 10 to 4 vote by the Law Enforcement and Finance committees. A Wisconsin Assembly equal rights bill may force La Crosse County to hire four female jailers at about fifty thousand dollars. County personnel director Kenneth Guthrie says Bill 431 requires jailers to be of the same sex as prisoners on duty at all times. The plan would also explore reclassifying a stenomatron and moving a radio operator to the jail to double as a jailer, prompting debate about patrol communications and dispatcher duties.
