In Lake Mills Wisconsin BION HENDERSON recalls a brutal gale testing man and timber. He describes towering hardwoods creaking under 90 degree arcs and conifers groaning as the lake roars in fury. The storm tears boats from moorings and flings a dock ashore as he fights the surf with heavy boots and a crow bar.
In La Crosse district a push to finish the census count is under way after Allen J. Collins said the tally is about 9 percent complete. The drive targets those not reached by enumerators and invites them to mail a form to the district office. City directories and Sanborn maps will help locate unreported dwelling units. A large staff will edit and tabulate portfolios as population figures for communities are released with cooperation from missed persons. Counties involved include Crawford Grant Juneau La Crosse Lafayette Monroe Richland Sauk and Vernon.
Partly cloudy and cooler tonight lowering to 38. Sunday mostly fair and warmer in the afternoon with a high near 60.
Washington report says Senate investigators recommended contempt citations for Earl Browder and Frederick Vanderbilt Field for refusing to answer questions before the foreign relations subcommittee. Attorney Edward P. Morgan said a citation resolution was drafted for full committee action. Browder and Field cited constitutional rights and possible self incrimination as reasons for silence. The inquiry targets alleged Communist influence in the State Department.
Madison police say a clothespin saved Mrs Myrie Staven from a dangerous roof collapse in her backyard Friday. While removing clothes from a line she bent to pick up the pin and a 20 by 12 foot front porch roof toppled overhead, landing a yard away. A neighbor estimated the roof rose about 49 feet before dropping nearby.
Census activity covering population housing and agriculture for the La Crosse district urges residents who were missed or unsure of enumeration to return the blank form. Addressed to A. J. Collins, District Supervisor, Bureau of the Census, La Crosse Wisconsin, with instructions to mail the report now.
A Wisconsin wind storm packing near hurricane force winds killed two people and damaged millions in goods and property. In Superior winds reached 88 mph for about two minutes, while Green Bay reported 82 mph. Two men died in separate incidents, Henry Aspen and Harry Blucher, as structures and utilities suffered extensive destruction.
Canadian armed forces moved into Manitoba’s Red River valley to direct flood relief after dikes burst in Winnipeg and St Boniface. Brig. Mor ton was named flood relief director with civil authority retained. Thousands evacuated as the river threatened the city, with hospitals moved and a volunteer worker killed.
Rep Lawrence H Smith a Racine Republican told Wisconsin young Republicans the nation under Democratic rule faces abolition of personal freedom and reliance on omnipotent government. He said a young man cannot work at a trade without permission from a labor dictator who seeks political tribute. He argued a young entrepreneur cannot run a business without bureaucrats taking profits and imposing losses that hinder growth.
Secretary of State Acheson, en route to Europe, urged the West to rally its forces with utmost vigor to meet the global communist challenge. He said free nations will face crucial tests in the coming years and called for mobilization of moral and material strength ahead of London talks with Schuman and Bevin.
Storm delays mail from the east causing Monday delivery and later arrival of Milwaukee No 57. Postmaster Wenzel M Dvorak says periodicals and magazines will be delayed until Monday. Fort Lewis Maj Artie M Heape reports three year old Tommy Jenkins, missing two days, has been found alive and well after suspected kidnapping.
President Truman unveils a five point program to aid small businessmen including self sustaining loan insurance up to 25000, creation of national investment companies for long term loans, RFC reform, RFC under the commerce secretary and a data and research clearing house for technical help. Senate Democrats praise it while Senator Wherry criticizes increased government spending and interference. The proposal aims to address unemployment with broad finance and credit measures and seeks action this session.
The administration's foreign aid authorization survived Senate action with a cut of about 250 million dollars. The 3.122 billion package passed 40 to 8, while the third year of the Marshall plan faced the only substantial reduction.
