The House rejected Representative Sharp of Ohio's amendment to place wool on the dutiable list under the Wilson Underwood tariff bill. After an hour of heated debate the amendment failed by an overwhelming viva voce vote, ending the fight to tax free raw wool.
Representative Mondell of Wyoming denounced the rags on the free list in the Wil son-Underwood tariff bill as a symbol of needless extravagance. He said the proposal would bring rags from distant places and make them a “chief necessity” after the bill.
Democratic insurgents led by Representative Sharp opposed free wool as a tax and safety measure, while Underwood defended the clause. The debate touched wool duties income tax and free lists for wood pulp paper and wheat flour as the Wilson Underwood bill moved toward action. Republican critics warned of Canadian reciprocity impact and millers warned of threats to flour production.
Miss May Etheridge of Shaftesbury theatre confirms engagement to Lord Edward Fitzgerald youngest brother of the Duke of Leinster. The 21 year old actress plans to marry and live in Ireland. The Leinster dukedom lineage dates cited include Desmond and Lord Edward Fitzgerald born in 1888 and 1892.
London May 6 dispatches report King Nicholas of Montenegro may abdicate after surrendering Scutari. The Montenegrins disapprove of his submission to the powers and a safer heir is Crown Prince Danilo, should he exit the throne.
Two Cuban aviators Rollo and Parla depart by ship to Key West to fly back to Havana for the Havana Key West $10,000 aviation prize. The contest is open only to Cubans and the navy is ordered to patrol the flight line for accidents.
Madison May 6 The bill correcting and amending the work ingmen's compensation act as framed by the state industrial commission was advanced to engrossment today by a vote of 57 to 17. The substitute amendment fixes a flat rate for injuries and does away with the contributory negligence clause.

Giford Pinchot, former forester, told the Senate Territories Committee that farming out the government rail road and public coal lands in Alaska could require lessees to pay five cents per ton royalty on coal. He argued government ownership is essential for a $25 million Alaska railroad, to control property, coal prices and working conditions, while denying it would spur development and stating dividends would be needed for water stock. He backed enactment of the Wickersham-Chamberlain government railroad bill.
Madison May 14 meeting of the Republican state central committee at 2 pm to discuss continuous organization. A 6 pm banquet, open to all Republicans, will be hosted by Sol Levitan as hundreds of leaders gather. Senator G E Scott predicts Wisconsin style unity will shape the national party.
