Mayor Anderson confirmed William Torrance as a police and fire commissioners member for a five year term under a new law adding a fifth member. Lucius C. Colman was reappointed for four more years to the board.
John Vaughan, 39, killed Lizzie Strubel, 11, daughter of Charles Strubel, a gardener, in Lafayette Indiana. He then attempted suicide with ten neck and chest wounds and was jailed. Authorities feared lynching as Vaughan claimed the girl struck him and he acted after an argument.
Delegates from the Central Federated union opposed a motion to condemn President Roosevelt after the three member committee report on his undesirables remark regarding Moyer and Haywood. Roosevelt sent a letter reaffirming justice for these men and promising action if new evidence shows miscarriage of justice.
A Wilson Colwell post G A R committee including Geo H Dalton B Bryant and Henry Vincent will meet with other post committees to prepare a Memorial Day observance program. They will coordinate with Spanish American War veterans and publish the finalized plan once agreed. No definite details yet. likely follow prior years’ format.
Freddy Westphal age fifteen, son of Mr and Mrs Christ Westphal, died at his home at 1414 Farwell Street this morning at 4 oclock. He had been crippled since a paralytic stroke five years ago. Funeral arrangements will be announced later with Mrs Theo Mannstedt in charge.

A Washington report to the Inland Waterways Commission concludes that waterways lack independence from railroads. It says canals not owned by states are railroad property or under railroad control and that water rates are shaped by railroad influence with no current authority for the interstate commission over water carriers without railroad links.
R C Martin of Chicago, newly named electrical inspector for La Crosse, arrived this morning with Alderman Walter Rose. He will share an office with City Engineer W S Wood and begins duties tomorrow. The post is a new office, and he expects a busy start outlining responsibilities.
A dog running wild through Main Street and near the Second District School panicked children before being shot by Officer McGrath on the owner’s porch at 519 Cass Street. The dog reportedly had hydrophobia and bit a boy, though no one else was injured.
