The opening marks a new facility for education in the third ward. Officials announced the completion as part of ongoing district expansion, naming key figures and expected enrollment milestones.
The board approved placing voting booths in school basements and suitable spaces across the north and south sides. A pilot of flowing water drinking fountains was endorsed for the third ward and high school, with broader installation after testing. Fall term begins September 1 with new teachers and added courses in French and social geography.
In Chicago Judge Ball ruled Richard O. Kruger Jr must continue alimony to his ex wife who left for Indiana to marry another man. Kruger plans to appeal. In Bloomington fifteen letters from the spirit world read in court relate to the Crumbaugh estate dispute.
London May 5 heavy losses attended yesterday's clash between General Wilcock's force and Afshans attempting to invade India via the Khyber pass. The Asiatics fought hard but were driven back across the border after a dawn to dark engagement. Government hopes Wilcock's actions crushed the raids and tribes did not join.
Santa Cruz May 5 Evans known as Fighting Bob rejoined the fleet seizing command of the battleship Connecticut at Monterey this morning. The ship will sail at 3 for San Francisco with the fleet to follow after joining later ships.
Union officials in Cleveland give President Dupont until 2 PM to name a referee for the legal board to decide if the Cleveland Electric wage contract binds the Municipal Traction company. If no reply by then, a strike order may follow.
Captain Swanson of Winona will address the City Mission this evening. Rev. Wheeler also speaks. A special musical program is planned for Thursday evening. Everyone is invited.
The park board plans to remove commercial features that mar park beauty starting with Fourth Ward park billboards. Commissioners expect citizen cooperation and will approach merchants about removing boards without objection.
Captain Chas. H. Rawlinson of Company M Wisconsin National Guard receives notice that a new rectangular target six feet high and four feet wide will replace targets A and K in slow timed and rapid pistol fire. Targets will be visible at seventy five yards. Order signed by Charles R. Williams major ordnance Wisconsin National Guard.
Washington May 5 The last 24 hours point to approval of the Vreeland currency bill at a Republican conference as Payne amendment proposals surface. The clash between Payne Fowler and Dalzell factions clouds prospects, with Cannon and insurgents scrambling for action while fund-raising and the president’s program loom large.
Madison, May 5. Geo. M. Paine files sworn statement at the secretary of state office revealing a campaign expenditure of $1,415.69 defeating the Taft delegate from Oshkosh.
Mayor Shelby Becker plans to campaign Wisconsin from a balloon in the fall as he tests the craft with owner C A Corey. The rig includes a ten seat basket, camping gear, lime stove, cork lining for safety, and a weight under 400 pounds capable of lifting three tons. Corey will enter Chicago in the international aeronautique contests for a world championship in July.
Joseph Dale of Galesville asks the circuit court to reopen Jane Dale versus him so he can answer after claiming she misled him about dropping the action. Attorneys argue to show cause for reopening and Dale testifies. judge extended time for ruling as lawyers file a needed affidavit. Nearby, Judge Fruit grants a divorce to Sarah Bowers in the same session.
In Trenton on May 5 the New Jersey Republican convention is seen as harmonious with the big four delegates to Chicago set as Gov. Fort Senator Briggs Senator Kean and State Chairman David Baird. Former Chairman Dryden hints at a Taft endorsement and praises Roosevelt era leadership while noting other candidates for future roles.
Two crew members of a Louisville and Nashville freight train drowned when the engine struck Schonberg creek near Birkner Illinois at midnight and was swept by 15 feet of water. Engineer C E Ward and Fireman Fred Welsman perished as a cloudburst turned the creek into a raging torrent washing away several houses at French village.
The hunt for the Stephen bank robbers narrows to Canada as five men from Emerson St Jean and Morris are deemed not involved. Authorities believe two gangs were at Emerson Thursday morning. Canadian officers seized the wrong crowd. Eyewitnesses report a second gang near the Red River east of St Jean heading toward Winnipeg.

Four men bound and gagged a watchman at Woodlawn and stole the entire contents of a Chicago store in a furniture van valued at 3500 dollars. Witnesses fired on the fleeing robbers from a nearby window as dynmite fuses were found at the doorway.
