Fire Rages Through Spence McCord Drug Firm and Adjoining Buildings
An early morning blaze destroyed the Spence McCord Drug Co on North Front street and damaged neighboring structures including the Funke Candy factory. The loss is estimated at about 127000 with insurance on stock at 65000 for Spence and substantial coverage for McCord. Firefighters battled flaming walls, exploding chemicals, and rising water as nine blasts and many smaller explosions rocked the block. The fire continued into the day with the vault intact but offices and records destroyed.
