The Associated Press reports mass labor action as one million workers in coal, auto, rail, electrical, and meat sectors engage in present or threatened strikes on May Day. Rail mediation chief Frank Douglass notes a possible path to avert a nationwide railway strike planned for May 11.

Stassen argues no veto should bind others and a UN charter pact could be drafted. He named England, France, Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg and urged U S invites. During a brief Rhode Island visit he met Republican leaders and dined with delegates, avoiding predictions while private GOP sources say he could win several of Rhode Island’s eight delegates but the delegation remains unpledged.
Milwaukees six major breweries suspend the traditional suds clause as union workers walk out for higher wages. The free beer perk, part of the contract with United Brewery Workers Local 9, is not handed out on picket lines. Negotiations stall with an 16 cents per hour gap as the strike runs from Monday.
The American Legion emblem committee selects two blue serge uniform options for 250000 women members, proposing a shirt waist dress or an Eisenhower jacket with a fingered skirt, while keeping the current uniform as a possibility. Mesoloras.
The communications commission yesterday issued a construction permit for a new standard radio station in Shawane County Wisconsin. The Shawane County Leader Publishing Co. will operate on 960 kilocycles with 1 kilowatt daytime power.
Gust Degler was found not guilty of resisting an officer after a two hour jury deliberation. The March 28 incident involved Police Officer Ferdon Goodman of Tomah and a confrontation over parking. Judge O W Sprech er criticized the courtroom chaos and lax city policing as spectators cheered the verdict.
Junior police oversaw 108 youngsters in a bicycle court session as tickets were handed for municipal bicycle rule violations. Police Officer Leonard Bennett warned of 60 day bike suspensions for third tickets and cited two auto bicycle collisions and a noon hour school incident.

A 60-year-old woman, Mrs. Irene Harber of 221 South Eighth Street, was injured Friday night after being struck by a car driven by Herbert F. Hemker of Bangor at the Sixth and King streets intersection. Harber was taken to a local hospital with a possible fractured right knee. Hemker said he heard a thud, stopped, and found Harber on the street after turning from King onto Sixth.

In Berlin crowds backed and rejected communism amid Soviet and Western displays while Warsaw and Milan saw large socialist turnout and anti US sentiment.
