Members of the House Armed Services Committee disclosed plans to add about 647 million dollars to next year's defense budget. Dwight D. Eisenhower testified that a half billion more could strengthen defenses. The bill sets 13 922 127 000 dollars in cash and contract authority for the armed forces for the coming year. Vinson said he would urge a strong speech on the grave situation given Russia's atomic secret. Eisenhower warned defenses may not be as strong as possible.
A Shelby town meeting at 8 p m will discuss Elm Grove district issues including potential attachment to La Crosse district and plans for a new elementary school. Attendees include the county school committee Elm Grove school board district residents and La Crosse board representatives. The present school is crowded with 118 pupils this fall in three rooms.
After a thorough inspection by architects and builders, the main portion of First Congregational Church at Seventh and Main was declared unsafe for services and activities. The board of trustees voted to close the affected 1870 section, while the 1930 addition remains in use. The congregation will hold Palm Sunday and Maundy Thursday services at Washburn School Auditorium with other departments relocating to available classrooms. The wind storm of Oct 1 is cited as the cause of damaged piers and weakened walls.
Market Square will stop sales of poultry and other perishable foods for the Summer season due to mild weather. Edward Peters of the health department said the action is in line with city ordinances and takes effect immediately. Vegetables are unaffected and the resumption date will be announced later.
Harold Russell World War I amputee and advocate for veterans will speak in La Crosse on Monday April 3. The Amvets have arranged his appearance to address members and the public about the organization and veteran welfare. The meeting is open to all veterans.
Mayor Henry Ahrens will cut a ribbon at the VFW hall Friday noon signaling the opening of the two day Home and Kitchen Exposition featuring 25 booths. Notables from La Crosse including Junior Chamber of Commerce leaders will attend along with entertainers Helene and Great Roy and Martha Logan. Tickets at the door. under 12 admitted free.
The China Mail said on Thursday that Russian troops and personnel are beginning to appear in Shanghai. Reports credit the arrivals to newcomers from a "Red City," with many mentions of Russian personnel entering the lower Yangtze area.
City health officer Dr. Garland Weidner announced that after chlorination ten samples taken Tuesday were safe for consumption. Health department tests show chlorine reaching outlying areas and all Wednesday samples had effective chlorine levels. Weidner stated the water is now safe to drink with home disinfection.

FBI Director Hoover said an agent would be on hand, with Neely given priority on the floor, as the relations subcommittee investigates alleged Communist influence.
President Truman summoned correspondents to his Winter White House for a news conference to discuss shifts in his administration and reaffirm support for Secretary of State Acheson. He warned of Republican attacks on the state department as Congress moved to earmark funds for European recovery and domestic farm surpluses.
Norfolk first captain of the battleship Missouri William D Brown pleaded guilty to three charges and four specifications of negligence and neglect of duty in the Missouri grounding on January 17 He faced a general court martial with four rear admirals and three captains on the panel The former commanding officer told a naval inquiry he bore sole responsibility for the incident Brown was relieved as commander after refloating the ship February 1 The court martial also charged Cmdr John R Millett and Lieut Cmdr Frank G Morris with related duties and negligence The panel includes Rear Admirals and Captains with Judge Advocate Lieut Cmdr Ralph A Groom presiding
La Crosse county American Red Cross surpassed its 1950 goal with $22 545 51 reported by fund drive chairman E B Lamp. The county chapter aims for about $23 000 as final reports come in from across the county with Mrs Joseph Callaway coordinating.
In Oklahoma City a 13 year old babysitter Norma Lee Cook is hailed a heroine after saving four children from a fast spreading house fire. The Tate family losses include clothing and furniture with $2000 damage.
A major blaze at the Belle Vista sanatorium in Springfield township Montgomery County killed nine male patients strapped to beds or confined in barred rooms. Dozens were rescued by firefighters and nurses as smoke filled the basement to upper floors and the wing housed convalescent and mental patients.
John F. Euler, 68, of 1514 South 11th street La Crosse, died in a local hospital after a fall on a home stairway. Born April 11 1681 in La Crosse he is survived by his wife two daughters two sons a sister two brothers eighteen grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Funeral services set for 3 pm Saturday at the residence with burial in Oak Grove cemetery. Friends may call 7 to 9 pm Friday at Sletten McKee Co south side chapel.
