Dr. W. A. Anderson attacked the Republican platform at Union Hall, accusing them of a hollow health plank and a push for lucrative offices. He cited past actions, questioned reform ties, and challenged GOP claims while praising Democratic aims and voter oversight.
Carlos P Taft secretary of war’s brother issues a noon challenge to Senator Foraker to a contest in Ohio that would eliminate either Foraker or Taft from politics. Taft accepts and Foraker aims to be president and senator, urging a simple canvass to drive Foraker from Ohio politics. Charles Taft to seek either presidency or senate and prefers early voter presentation of the fight.
Washington March 30 The White House denies rumors the president is ill saying he had indigestion yesterday but received callers today He has not ridden horseback nor played tennis for several days confirming no illness reported by officials
Billings Montana report notes Harned and Winnie plan a bold attempt to float a reinforced skiff through the canyon of the Big Horn river the first such passage. The route is notorious with the Indian name Place of Death and previous attempts have cost lives.
Fair tonight and Sunday with little temperature change. Lows near 28 and highs near 48, winds around 15 mph. River stage at 9.6 feet with a 1.4 foot rise in 24 hours as the river continues to rise rapidly.
Mrs. Hannah Petrie of Knowles in Dodge county has been acquitted of arson charges. The verdict ends the case against her with the defendant cleared of the crime.
The Mississippi river rapidly rises threatening Gerald and nearby residents. Water stood 9.6 feet this morning and is forecast to reach ten feet by night and possibly twelve feet tomorrow if the trend continues. Several towns report rising levels and the river is expected to ascend further over the next two days.
Chicago March 30 The closing campaign for mayor pits Dunne against Busse with acrimonious exchanges among Hearst and Tribune factions. Hearst sues Tribune for 2.5 million, Busse sues Hearst, and other suits loom as traction ownership remains the central issue.
Western Union announces a new telegraph rate scale with increases up to 25 percent to take effect Monday. The Postal will likely follow suit, affecting long distance and local message charges nationwide.
In New York on March 30 the Thaw lunacy commission resumed its examination at 10 30 this morning with Thaw appearing in a secret session.
D P Murphy once with St Paul died in Fort Wayne after attending Stahl's funeral. He checked into a hotel, ate breakfast, then swallowed carbolic acid. He died within fifteen minutes, his last look at the breakfast table reflecting despair after Stahl's death.
Wisconsin grain and livestock summary shows 7 000 hogs receipts with prices 5 to 10 cents higher. Light hogs 6.35 to 6.60, mixed 6.35 to 6.62, sows 6.25 to 6.62, rough 6.25 to 6.35. Cattle receipts 300, steady. sheep 6 000, steady. Minneapolis cash grain quotes list assorted wheat corn and oats with fractional cents.
In St Louis three hundred oilers at several breweries walked out this morning and it is reported that 1,100 bottlers will quit during the day as the strike spreads through the industry.
Taft and party arrived this morning aboard the Mayflower at Colon and were welcomed by Chief Engineer Stevens Dr Gorgas and General Manager Berd of the Panama railway. They boarded a train for Panama. The voyage was uneventful and all party members are in good health.
Baner Hanson and Steven B. Johnson were charged with breaking into Ole G. Lewis saloon at 1732 George street. Judge Brindley sentenced both to one year at Waupun after a guilty plea. Prosecutor Otto Bosshard led the case with no defense attorney.
At the request of the Interstate Commerce Commission the eastern and western trunk line and central freight association territories have agreed to postpone their planned grain rate increase until May 1.
The interstate commerce commission directed American, Adams, United States, Pacific and Wells Fargo Express companies to submit within thirty days full statements of their interests, connections and commodities carried. All associations and dealers may testify at forthcoming hearings.
In a Junior League contest at the YMCA the Mohicans and the Apaches battled to a scoreless drought with neither team scoring in the first half. The game ended with a rare 0 to 0 score as both defenses pressurized.
Washington March 30 Charles A Riley said he came to Washington on a freight train this morning and tried to see the president He told officers the president summoned him by wireless to testify in a murder trial Police are holding him for examination.
Miss E. Haskins and Miss L. Johns, teachers in the public schools, left this morning for Dodgeville to spend their Easter vacation with their parents. Miss Buell and Miss Heideman, high school teachers, went to their homes to rest. Miss Florence Hargrave departed for Wilton Wisconsin to visit her mother and friends.
The State Bank of Elkhart Lake has been incorporated with a capital stock of £23,000.
Chicago March 30 commissioners Kemp and Neill met railroad representatives at the Auditorium. The managers could not grant more than a 10 to 7 per cent wage increase and a ten hour day due to 2-cent fare laws. Garretson and Morrissey were heard, workers cited 41 per cent living-cost rise versus 12 per cent for others, while railroad earnings doubled. No near settlement.
Congressman Esch has about fifty applications from the Rod and Gun club at Trempealeau to stock trout streams nearby. He has petitioned the U S Fish and Game Commission and expects a response soon. Eau Claire is launching the same effort.
Madison Wis March 30 Grant county will hold a primary election next Tuesday on the United States senatorship. Assemblyman H E Roethe proposes the plan and will vote as the result shows. Delegates from Stephenson Lenroot and Davidson seek patronage in Grant county to gain the Boethe vote. Lieutenant Governor Connor is attributed with a political trick for Governor Davidson.
The funeral for Rheinhart Waecker who died on the street was held this afternoon at 2 from 1111 South Third Street. Rev Gamm Miller Brothers officiated. Pallbearers were C F Klein Herman Boerner Nic Kaiser M Guenther and Leonard Zeisler. Waecker longtime head brew master at Heileman brewery is survived by a wife and four children interment at Oak Grove cemetery
Two democratic meetings will be held tonight at Snow Plow hall and Concordia. Speakers at Snow Plow hall include A. C. Wolfe J. F. Doherty and O. R. Skaar while Concordia hosts Dr. W. A. Anderson W. F. Wolfe ACA Bentley and John F. (incomplete list) continuing remarks.
