President Ford arrives at La Crosse Municipal airport at 7 15 p m and delivers a 10 minute speech at 8 p m in Mary E Sawyer Auditorium. The visit includes a motorcade and Q A. local live TV coverage will not be provided.
Gen. Jorge Videla, army commander and junta member, will assume the presidency Monday as violence spikes after Isabel Peron's overthrow. The coup ends a 21 month rule with at least 19 dead this year and several Peronist officials arrested amid a widening crackdown.
In Vail Colorado a gondola derailment from a frayed cable dropped cars about 100 feet killing three people and injuring nine. A six member U S Forest Service team investigates while other lifts were halted and runners warned off the mountain.
Sen. Fred Risser proposes Gov Lucey open the governor’s mansion to public tours during the Bicentennial year. He says the residence is a landmark supported by tax dollars and should be accessible to the public.
The Associated Press reports 24 tornadoes across Illinois Missouri Arkansas Oklahoma Alabama Mississippi Florida with four dead and 60 plus injured. In Spiro Oklahoma two killed and about 50 hurt as power, lines, and homes were destroyed. A tornado near Sarcoxie Missouri killed a man in his late 70s and injured his wife.
Former Alabama Governor George Wallace arrives in La Crosse Sunday afternoon for an overnight stay after NBC appearances. Campaign aide James Hunt says Wallace will stay at the Holiday Inn and hold a 11:30 a.m. press conference Monday before leaving for Green Bay.
The Wisconsin Senate approved a bill to ban polychlorinated biphenyls after July 1, 1977 with exemptions for electrical equipment and certain paper recycling discharges. The measure prohibits manufacture sale or use of PCBs in most cases and targets contamination found in some state waters.
Helen Jackson, wife of Sen. Henry Scoop Jackson, spoke at the Rama da Inn with about 150 Wisconsin machinists as her husband campaigns for the Democratic presidential nomination. She called him a man of integrity and said he would prioritize unemployment and senior citizens while pursuing detente and labor reform.
