In Chapter 29 The Dark Garden Judas leads a small band through dark streets to a temple gate. A Roman officer bribes a gatekeeper to open the gate as imperial troops murmur why they hunt one man with rumored powers.
Senators Taft and Vandenberg urged creation of a nonpartisan commission to assess future U S aid needs beyond the Marshall Plan. They propose including Truman's point four program and call for broad representation from all national sectors to avoid partisan influence. The plan has backing from Democrats and support from the State Department.
The Supreme Court on Monday upheld the contempt of Congress conviction of Eugene Dennis, leader of the American Communist party. The 5-2 decision, written by Justice Minton, rejected claims that a jury including government employees could not be fair. Dennis was sentenced to one year in prison and a $1,000 fine.
The body of 59 year old John Zimmerer known as Moosic was found floating face down in the Black River near its junction with the Mississippi and La Crosse rivers. Coroner Dr George Reay ruled accidental drowning. He was last seen Saturday night near his boathouse three blocks north of the river junction. Funeral services set for Wednesday at Hellwig Morris chapel and St Josephs cathedral with burial in Catholic cemetery. He leaves three sisters.

Five year old Roger Schooley died at Ringling Bros circus in Sarasota after a elephant named Dolly whipped its trunk and stepped on his head while the boy fed peanuts. Parents Prof and Mrs Elie Schooley of Las Vegas witnessed the tragedy as the circus prepared to move to New York for its 1950 opening.
Pope Pius XII in St. Peter's Basilica called on Catholics worldwide to pray and do penance on Passion Sunday. He warned the modern world is almost universally flooded with moral decadence and urged spiritual renewal.
The city began installing portable chlorination equipment at the main pumping station on Myrick Road Park Meadows to sterilize new water mains. The board cannot estimate installation time, but complete saturation with chlorine will take several days after setup. Health officer Dr. Garland Weidner warns any contamination signals possible leaks and risk of an epidemic.
Senator McCarthy labeled Owen Lattimore the top Russian spy in the state department. Lattimore, in Afghanistan on UN duties, called the charges pure moonshine and said he will return home to respond in detail. Severe flooding across southeastern Minnesota and southwestern Wisconsin from the Root river prompted evacuations as the river rose to record levels. Officials urged a U S Geological Survey investigation to secure a flood control plan while communities from Rushford to Lanesboro fought damage and loss of power.
Two women refused to surrender a rural telephone line in Dane County delaying the Blooming Grove fire department. The fire destroyed a shed and about $6,000 in farm machinery. the owner said it took 10 minutes to reach the line, and the women were visiting locals.
Secretary of Defense Johnson flew to Key West for a morning conference with President Truman. They planned Johnsons upcoming talks in The Netherlands with North Atlantic military leaders and potential vacancies in the defense establishment amid Republican attacks on foreign policy.
