Vanguard satellite reaches orbit from Cape Canaveral
The Navy launched the three stage Vanguard rocket from Cape Canaveral at 7 16 a m Eastern time and President Eisenhower announced at 9 39 a m that a small test vehicle had been placed in orbit The mission aims to support International Geophysical Year tests and track the satellite as it completes a 90 to 100 minute orbit with an altitude of 300 to 1500 miles and a 35 degree inclination The launch followed two prior failed attempts and included ground tracking minor hold due to a station issue and the recovery of first stage over the Atlantic

Kate M. Bouquet a Caledonia resident and La Crosse Tribune correspondent for over 40 years died Sunday after a long illness. Funeral services will be held Tuesday at Steffen Funeral Home and St Peter's Church with burial at Calvary Cemetery. She was a studio photographer secretary at Palen Studio for 50 years and active in church and Catholic Daughters. She is survived by two sisters and a half brother.

Vanguard satellite may orbit 5 to 10 years say Dr Hagen
Dr John P. Hagen director of the Vanguard project announced that the new earth circling satellite probably will be in orbit five to ten years. He said provisional figures show the satellite traveling 18000 to 19000 miles an hour and reaching 2500 miles from Earth while approaching as close as 400 miles. He added the Navy plans soon to launch a larger instrumented satellite about basketball size. The new satellite is six inches in diameter and likely invisible except under rare conditions. The Vanguard rocket third stage that launched the ball remains in orbit and may be visible.
