Reverend D C Jones leads a renewal at First Presbyterian in La Crosse with old fashioned gospel seen as drawing crowds. Since taking the post four years ago 208 new members joined, total 420, many wage earners, with Easter growth expected. Jones plans Bible study classes and a large Mothers Circle to aid benevolent work. He has pastored in Eau Claire Superior Rice Lake Manitowoc and declined a call to Manitowoc to stay in La Crosse.
In Chicago on March 13 a bulldog named Buddy dragged 6 year old Ralph Nelson in front of a street car after tugging at his chain. The boy was killed when he was ground beneath the vehicle while guiding the dog across a busy street.

The grand jury indicted both for keeping a disorderly house and Atlantic City authorities were asked to arrest them. Annie Gray, who ran ten fashionable dives, is alleged by District Attorney Whitman to have paid over a quarter of a million dollars for police protection in 30 years.

Brandeis had been seen as cabinet material and considered for several posts, including Indian commissioner. Washington March 13 John Skelton Williams of Virginia was appointed assistant secretary of the treasury by President Wilson after a conference with Senators Martin and Swanson.

Mrs. Florence Gamble of Boone Iowa pleaded guilty in federal court to using the mails to defraud men she promised to marry. Accompanied by her husband and two small children she was sentenced by Judge Smith McPherson to a $500 fine and sixty days in the county jail. The judge imposed practically the minimum for the offense.
Chicago detectives under Assistant State's Attorney Johnson prepared warrants for at least twelve merchants and insurance adjusters linked to the million dollar arson trust. Benjamin Fink and John Daniel provided confessions as Henry Cohen, an insurance adjuster, was arrested and later bailed on 25,000 dollars. The targeting houses include the notorious house of many fires gutted five times.

Eugene Wiggenhorn, once a La Crosse cigar maker, died March 11 at his Pasadena home after a yearlong illness. Born May 12, 1839 in Westphalia, he immigrated in 1848, later partnered in Pamperin and Wiggenhorn, retired to Pasadena in 1889. Survived by wife, two sons Guido and Hilmer, daughter Mrs E N Borreson, and brothers William and Percy Wiggenhorn. funeral plans not yet known.
