The Franklin Debating club held the first municipal campaign meeting in Frei stad hall praising MacMillan’s candidacy while defending Dengler’s record. Speakers clashed with audience as figures like D G MacMillan and Roy V Ahlstrom aligned with two sides in a heated debate over mayoral re election.
Weather bulletin notes unsettled conditions across Wisconsin Minnesota Iowa and nearby regions with snow or rain tonight or Saturday. High pressure moved into the Ohio valley while a low covers the northwest bringing warmer temperatures.

Washington March 7. It cost about 72000 to make Woodrow Wilson president. The citizens inaugural committee spent about 48000 and the congressional committee nearly 25000 all on incidentals. No inaugural ball means subscribers to the citizens fund lose about 20 percent. Previously the ball raised enough to cover the fund and even yield a surplus.
A fierce fire roars through Hot Springs Arkansas March 7 threatening several lives. Authorities estimate losses at about half a million dollars as crews fight to bring the blaze under control in the city’s business center.

A violent blast wrecked a British steamship causing widespread panic in the city. Several vessels nearby were injured or damaged as tremors rippled through the harbor, and authorities began emergency responses and investigations.
A dynamite blast sinks the British steamer Alum Chine and the tug Atlantic while severely damaging the US collier Jason near Wagner's Point. Dozens killed or missing, about fifty injured, with debris and shattered windows alarming Baltimore and nearby towns as crews scramble to rescue survivors. The blast, centered on a scow loaded with dynamite for Panama Canal work, caused widespread panic and extensive property damage. The exact death toll remains uncertain.
Benjamin Kahn a wealthy South Bend merchant linked to an arson trust operating in Chicago Kansas City Fort Wayne and towns in Wisconsin and Indiana was found guilty of setting fire to his own store to collect insurance last year. The jury deliberated forty hours.

Parliament ends a lengthy session as home rule and Welsh disestablishment bills pass the Commons but are rejected by the Lords. The White Slave Bill clears both houses, proposing flogging for procurers. The franchise reform bill is withdrawn amid suffragette amendments. The next session begins March 10 and resumes in 1914.

The funeral of Mrs. John Apel is scheduled for Sunday March 9 at 2 30 PM from the home 1805 Green Bay Street with Rev. John Klaus officiating. Interment will follow in Oak Grove cemetery.

Hearings occurred with City Attorney A H Schubert and attorneys from Law and Gordon present. Findings will be presented to the common council next Friday. The board will inspect the disputed site tomorrow.
City Attorney A H Schubert will address election officials and voters on election law tonight. Professor Schubert's civics class meets at 8 in the council chamber city hall. Registration opens Monday with booths open 9 to 8 both days. in person registration required as poll lists will be destroyed.
Julius Rosenwald of Sears Roebuck tells Illinois senate committee that low wages do not cause prostitution. Two Sears girls contradict him, saying pay as low as 4.50 a week and foreladies speed up workers. A second girl confirms scolders exist as restive girls are pressed to work long hours.
