Mar 4 bulletin from Marinette Wisconsin reports Isaac Stephenson a wealthy lumberman and La Follette backer has announced his candidacy to succeed Senator John C Spooner. Stephenson, a longtime figure in state politics, seeks a senate seat amid La Follette movement tensions and past ambitions.
In New York on March 4 the Thaw trial drew larger crowds as Mrs Thaw and her daughter arrived at the courthouse. Dr Evans was recalled and cross examinations continued with Jerome warning against attempting to inject error into the record. Evelyn visited her husband during the noon recess at the Tombs.
Senator John C Spooner of Wisconsin unexpectedly quits the Senate citing family duty and a return to law practice. He expects to depart May 1 1907 with John J Eself named as possible successor as Wisconsin voters prepare to elect a replacement in Madison.
In the Henry E. Horne versus Mexican Plantation case, Judge Fruit reserved judgment after final defense by George W. Bunge. The two week trial featured repeated motions and counter motions with an auction sale postponed. Horne traveled to Mexico as appeals and possible settlements loom. Rosenberger seeks court oversight of $50,000, with a $14,000 mortgage on plantation personal property. Horne owns the company's equity for $500.
Prison Inspector Kolbe was shot and killed by terrorists in UFA Russia this morning. One attacker was captured.
Portage Wis. based Company F trounces Company B 41 to 17 in Armory hall before about 200 spectators. Tonight Athletes and Spaldings of Chicago meet in the Y M C A auditorium for La Crosse’s first indoor baseball game of the season with Spaldings boasting Wiseman Goeckle Hawkins Masalistee Neuman Hoffman and Wening Sidelbahn and the Athletes featuring Burke Konetchy Swan A Konetchy Voight Kircheis Johnson Fuchser and Kohn in the lineup.

This week marks the nearing close of the billiard tournament at the new La Crosse club. The Class A entry finalizes after a Saturday night match between W A Wager and F W Robins, with Robins reportedly winning. Final standings split among Class A B C D entrants with planned round robin format and potential playoff for club championship in ties.

Tomah Wisconsin anticipates a major boom as C M & St P Railway builds machine shops 300 by 110 feet to service frogs and railroad material. Over one hundred workers already on site with May 1 completion eyed. 75 at foundation. The project attracts real estate gains and plans for 60 rental houses for workers and families.
C. L. V. Craft, agent for the Milwaukee road, today disclaimed knowledge of any improvement being made at Tomah.
Frank Birmingham a vagrant and thief with thirty nine prior convictions faces larceny charges after a depot robbery. Complainant Henry Sweeney alleges Birmingham took small change from Sweeney at the Chicago Milwaukee & St Paul depot. Birmingham has served time in Waupun and La Crosse County Jail and is to be arraigned tomorrow.
Washington sources report President Roosevelt sent a hopeful message in the evening as March brings calm in the capital. The brief dispatch mentions endurance and unity as lawmakers consider new policy steps.
The fifty-ninth congress adjourned at noon as the Senate approved the conference report limiting railroad workers hours to sixteen for trainmen and nine for telegraphers. The president signed the Aldrich financial bill, with the subsidy measure dead, and cabinet changes followed as Cortelyou was sworn in as secretary of the treasury.
Senator Thomas Morris leaves for Madison to back Mr Esch as Spooner successor. Morris says Esch has strong support among Madison lawmakers and that Isaac Stephenson has little chance. Mr Wharris has no information on Governor Davidson's candidacy.

Davidson drew no firm verdict but acknowledged the loss of a long serving leader and hinted at compromise candidates.
Two Quinn cousins aged 14 and 16 were killed on Sunday afternoon on the Chicago Milwaukee and St Paul tracks while walking in Madison Wisconsin. The collision involved two trains moving in opposite directions on parallel lines. One girl was the daughter of contractor Nicholas Quinn and the other of Forest Hill cemetery sexton William Quinn. An uncle, Charles Quinn, a traveling man, was killed in a separate wreck near Chippewa Falls on November 26.
