President Elliott of the baseball association secured Ed Becker’s contract this morning giving La Crosse a star short stop for the coming season. Becker has hunted moose near Winsted Minnesota this winter and is in fine condition. He played with the local team late last season.

Washington March 3 The Esch bill seeks government investigation into every fatal railroad accident and detailed reporting. The interstate commerce commission data shows 78 accidents in the year ending June 30 1907 causing 407 deaths and 1814 injuries with inadequate explanations.
Chicago March 3 Chauncey Hobart Northwestern center fielder recounts leaping from a chapin hall window to escape fifty nine masked girls who proposed to him with a pillow, bonbons sewn into his coat, and a heart decorated hat. The freshmen planned to snowball male visitors and monopolize leap year proposals.
In St Paul on March 3 the Democratic State Central Committee appears set to split into two factions, each holding separate meetings next Friday. One faction will endorse Governor Johnson and the other will endorse Bryan.

In Helena on March 3, Chief Louie of the Kalispell tribe was killed by an Indian named Plouf after a drunken quarrel. Plouf was then shot and killed by an intimate friend of Louie named Little Rock. Federal authorities are investigating.

Cornelia Harriman daughter of E H Harriman married Robert L Gerry son of Commodore Elbridge T Gerry at Grace church at noon. Fifty policemen cleared the streets around the church after a demonstrative crowd gathered. Rt Rev William Croswell Doon performed the ceremony. The couple will sail for Europe for several months.
