Illinois man succeeds Balts as school head
Fond du Lac native Richard A. Swantz 42 will become superintendent of the La Crosse Area Public School District. Swantz, currently superintendent of McHenry High School District in McHenry Illinois, replaces Eugene Balts. He has served in McHenry since 1971 and held prior posts including principal of McHenry High School West Campus and educator in the McHenry system. The La Crosse board plans to approve at a 4 30 p m special meeting at Central High School.

Murder charge and arrest warrant in Bentzen case
A warrant was issued for Law rence Albert McCoy Jr. 24 charged with first degree murder in the May 31 death of Michael H Bentzen 24. Bentzen was found June 4 near the Mississippi River after a suspected shooting on the Minnesota side. The complaint alleges McCoy intentionally killed Bentzen at the Mississippi River Bridge and describes a drive to the bridge where multiple shots were fired. McCoy is identified as manager of Rhonda's Rap and the case involves a black suspect and a white accomplice.
