Dean Challenged On Recollection Of Nixon Talks
Washington AP Ousted White House counsel John W. Dean III told the Senate Watergate committee he kept no notes of some meetings with President Nixon because remarks were incriminating. He said a 15 September 1972 meeting’s exact words could not be repeated though he perceived the message, and he referenced discussions of clemency for E Howard Hunt and payoff schemes for convicted defendants. Dean said a file of newspaper stories helped trigger memory, denied knowledge of Ehrlichman’s foreknowledge, and maintained he was only the messenger, not the conspirator.
