Sugar Loaf site marks Winnebago massacre near Prairie du Chien

A scenic overlook near Sugar Loaf Hill south of Prairie du Chien marks the 1828 massacre of the Gagnier family and Lipcrap, sparking the Winnebago War. The chief Red Bird and hunter Wekau killed the Gagnier men and slashed the infant, while Mrs Gagnier and a son escaped. The event led to US troops and a subsequent burial at Fort Crawford, now part of Villa Louis. Dr. Scanlon locates the massacre site and challenges prior grave-claim theories, noting Red Bird’s grave likely lies on fort grounds near Villa Louis.
