Finch Drops Bid to Nominate U S Health Chief

Washington AP Secretary of Welfare Robert H. Finch gave up trying to nominate Dr. John H. Knowles as the top U.S. health official amid AMA and Senate opposition. Finch said the protracted dispute would prevent Knowles from functioning effectively and hinted a new candidate would be sought. Newsday quoted Knowles blaming AMA power for stall tactics. City Youth Drowns While Swimming to Island

Fredrick W. Bundy an 18 year old from 927 Wood St La Crosse drowned Thursday in the West Channel of the Mississippi River while attempting to swim from Shore Acres to Gundersen Island about 600 feet away. Police say searchers aided by six boats recovered the body about 6 45 p m after a storm halted dragging operations. Bundy leaves a large family and services are set for Trinity Lutheran Church with burial in Woodlawn Cemetery.

Watertown Girl Dies In Culvert

Carmen Hady, 12, daughter of Mr and Mrs John Hady of Watertown, drowned Thursday when water in a rain filled Watertown culvert pulled her in while she waded with companions. Searches continued for two men missing after storms overturned sailboats in Lake Michigan near Green Bay. One officer, Michael Hussin, 23, feared drowned. 60-Mile-An-Hour Winds Fell Trees in La Crosse

A 450 mile thunderstorm line from Minneapolis to Kansas City brought 60 mph winds to La Crosse causing downed trees and wires, street flooding, and traffic delays. Police rescued three 16-year-olds from a river sandbar and a lightning strike damaged a ceiling light. weather officials called the storm unusually long and noted 1.7 inches of rain in 24 hours ending Friday morning.

Tornado Wrecks Barns and Trees Around York Wisconsin

A tornado near York in Jackson County struck at 5 30 p m damaging a steel pole barn at Darryl Humphrey’s farm scattering hay and machinery sections of the building. Cars in the yard were buried in trees and limbs fell across roads while power and phone service were disrupted. No injuries were reported.

La Crosse area storm blows in an awning at Jerry's Recreation injuring 15 year old LeMont Struxness of Viroqua. He suffered deep cuts to both arms and was treated at Vernon Memorial Hospital before being transferred to Lutheran Hospital in La Crosse.

Tornadoes, Severe Weather Hit Minnesota Region

A tornado touched down near Fremont in southeastern Winona County causing barn damage and uprooted trees. Heavy rain and winds up to 90 mph were reported in Winona and across eastern Minnesota with watches and warnings issued for the area. No injuries were reported.

Fire Destroys Barn on Ray Collins Farm Ontario Wis

A barn on the Ray Collins farm two miles south of Ontario on Highway 131 was destroyed by fire late Thursday. No injuries were reported and the cause was not released.
