CIVC members decline to participate in a private fourth celebration. Reasons vary from personal to organizational considerations, with several bodies turning back.
The city will not stage an official Fourth of July celebration. Harry Palmer and Frank E. Withrow promote a private enterprise for Independence Day with limited civic backing, while local groups distance themselves. Contingent plans include a regatta and racing events, but funding and grounds guarantees remain unresolved.
Boston June 27 The 5-year-old Francis Drake, abducted from Northampton New Hampshire, is found in the custody of his mother Mrs Drake attorneys say she has the legal right to keep him. Drake recently inherited half a million after his father's death.
Rain halted the Gen try Brothers parade as crowds gathered at the Seventeenth and Main grounds to see a performance hailed as one of the best. The pageant reached two blocks before rain forced the parade back, but the night show at eight will make up for the missed daytime event.
In London on June 27 Jarvis led a field of 38 swimmers including Beaurepaire Ooms Minson Mas and F C Gadasba along with six women on a 14 mile Thames course. Jarvis easily won the race with American Champion C M Daniels among the judges.
Mr and Mrs J O Olson who wed in Minneapolis June 17 spent a week with La Crosse relatives. The bride nee Jessie Wiskerden from the North Side was remembered as such. They visited North Side kin and Mr and Mrs Jos Roth on the South Side before returning to Minneapolis at 251 North Fremont Street where the groom works.
Mrs M A Moshe and Mrs J B Turnbell hosted a dinner party at Hotel May, West Salem, Thursday for a group of ladies. Attendees included Mrs James D E Rice, B D Morley, Maud Eberhart, R Willard, Geo Liam, Geo B Martin, H G Hayden, J O Kinnier, Laura Ballach, and Margaret Blumer of La Crosse. Mr and Mrs John A Bayer and children and Mrs C Bayer also travelled to West Salem and dined at the May hotel Thursday night.
Great Falls Mont June 27 The Great Falls Power and Town site company sold to a company led by John D Ryan for 1.5 million by James J Hill. It is reported Amalgamated Copper behind the purchase and a large regenerating plant is to be built.
Hal H. and J L Widman from Minneapolis are listed for a 2:40 trot and pace. Girtwood K. with Kildon and La Crosse participants Little Saide and Hilda J are noted along with several La Crosse drivers and horses. A 3:00 trot and pace features Russian and Bohemian Girl from La Crosse connections with Kinney and Bart.
Denver dispatch reports Senator Joe Bailey of Texas unable to attend the Denver convention due to illness while a subcommittee favors Thomas Taggart for national committee chair. Bryan reportedly prefers Theodore Bell for chair and contemplates a eastern vice presidential pick. Other updates place Dahlman as Bryan’s representative and Sullivan as a potential vice candidate.
Three companies from the Wisconsin National Guard will march to Viroqua on the Fourth unless plans are called off. The units are M and B from this city and L from Sparta. Captain H. Rawlinson has orders from Major Richards to wear the new dress uniform and to go fully equipped except for ball cartridges.

James Alexander Hemenway of Boonville Ind succeeds Fairbanks in the Indiana Senate with term ending 1999 while Fairbanks term ends 1909. Possible cabinet consideration looms. state portfolio cited as fitting future role.
London reports England plans a world watching display from July 1 to 22. The fleet will include twenty eight battleships nineteen armored cruisers fifty protected cruisers and 180 torpedo craft in what is billed as the most imposing array of war vessels ever assembled.
Madison Wis June 27 La Follette invites Cochems and McGee who nominated him to a farm visit in the afternoon. State Treasurer Dahl and others deny involvement and no others have been invited or gone to the La Follette farm.
Miss Margaret Haberman of Harigison Idaho and Mr and Mrs J Moore of Turkey River Iowa visit their sister Mrs Ed Carter at her Prospect Street home.
Scores visited the cemetery in Cleveland where a burial occurred yesterday. Orchids carnations roses and evergreens covered the grave to several feet deep with costly floral pieces on the trees above. Mrs Cleveland and two children plan to join others in Tamworth New Hampshire for an extended stay.
Clinton-Ill, July 27 Judge Philbrick denied the motion for a new trial in the Snell will case favoring Richard Snell, who sued to break the will of Col. Thomas Snell the aged millionaire. Notice of appeal was filed.

In a four-oared race at Poughkeepsie on June 27 Syracuse won with Pennsylvania second and Columbia third. Cornell did not finish after its shell struck the stake boat. Eastern analysts say the Badgers must show better practice to compete.
