John Levy Early La Crosse Leader and Pioneering Trader
John Levy, born 1820 in London, helped found La Crosse Wisconsin as an early trader, hotelier, banker, and eight-time alderman. He blazed routes with Dr. Samuel Snaugh, built the Levy Block, opened the city’s first dock, hosted early religious services, and faced personal tragedy including the 1849 death of his son Willie. Levy’s vote for friend Thomas Stoddard in 1856 denied him La Crosse’s first mayoralty by one vote.
