John Moffat and Harry Miller of Chicago pleaded guilty to short changing John Stephan of ten dollars at the five mile house on Mormon Coulee road and were fined $10 plus costs by Judge John Brindley in county court. The men face about $165 in fines costs and lawyers fees. a third man, John O'Brien, escaped custody during the arrest in Chaseburg. Miller's mother attended the trial, and the pair had no prior trouble.
The senate met at noon then joined by the house for the reading of the president's currency address. The house minutes show the joint session convened at 12:30 after the senate adjourned and the reading proceeded in full.
James Hanley of Waukon Iowa a former business college student confessed to burglarizing the National Pool hall on Sixth and Main streets. Two fingered wall prints tied him to the crime as he yielded to police at Central Station Saturday. Fifty one dollars were taken with he later claimed tried to establish an alibi in Milwaukee. He faces a burglary charge with a likely three to ten year term.
John O'Brien of St. Paul quickly nabbed by Central police after cashing a worthless ten dollar check drawn on the National Bank of La Crosse. The barber shop cashier alerted authorities, and Detective Fitzsimmons tracked him to a Fourth street saloon where O'Brien admitted guilt.
Mrs. Anne Samuels 76 former resident of this city died at her children's home in Minneapolis Sunday night after a year of invalidism and weeks of serious illness. Surviving relatives here include Mrs. W. R. Montague Mrs. D. G. McMillan and Elmer Samuels of West Salem. Funeral services will be held Wednesday afternoon in Oak Grove mausoleum chapel with burial in the mausoleum.
Martin Exel Sr died at his home 408 Jackson street at 7:15 this morning after a two week illness from Brights disease. Born in Baden Germany on April 5 1843 he came to the United States as a youth and settled in Wisconsin. He was a longtime member of the Frohsian Singing Society and an active Concordia Society member. Survived by wife two sons and four daughters. Funeral Wednesday at 2:30 p m at the residence Rev Henry Andreas officiating. Interment Oak Grove Cemetery.
About 25,000 garment workers favor a strike after a canvass of last week's ballot. The Garment Workers' union executive council will meet tonight to decide whether to order a walkout immediately or pursue further negotiations.
Chicago June 23 Jack Johnson the black pugilist serving one year in Joliet prison for white slavery asks the world to know as little as possible of life behind bars. His attorney petitions Federal Judge Carpenter to move the sentence to Fort Leavenworth Kansas arguing Johnson fears Chicago notoriety. An appeal also filed.
In Constantinople on June 23 twenty men were executed rapidly for conspiring to kill Mahmud Shevket Pasha the grand vizier. Witnesses testified two shooters fired on the vizier and Ibrahim Bey his aide who was killed. The twenty men were alleged ring leaders and were tried by court martial and convicted yesterday.
June 23. Consideration of the Alaska government railroad bill was blocked in the Senate today by Senator Overman who opposed all forms of government ownership of carriers. Senator Chamberlain argued against side tracking the measure but it went to the calendar.
President Wilson will personally investigate the resignation of John L. McNab as federal attorney for the San Francisco district. He has called for all papers in the case and notes the wider controversy over delayed trials in the Caminetti and Driggs cases under the immigration bureau.
Rev. E. G. Updike of Madison delivered the baccalaureate sermon at the normal school. He urged education as a path to spiritual ownership, warned against amoral philosophy, and said mental integrity and honesty are essential for leadership. The La Crosse Musical Club quartet and Miss Harriet B. Oltman provided musical numbers.
The case against John Friesmuth of Salem road, accused of abusing his twelve year old son Frank with a cultivator, was dismissed by Judge John Brindley in county court. Neighbors’ complaints were not corroborated. the boy testified that pulling the cultivator was more fun than work.
La Crosse attorney G. M. Woodward narrowly escaped serious injury this afternoon at 2 30 when struck by a Ford turning from Fifth to Main as streetcar discharged passengers. He received only a jolt after riding the car fender briefly. driver and bumper saved him from harm.
Discussion of the metal schedule consumed the senate democratic caucus today. A major fight developed over placing hand laws on the free list. Fifteen minor senate amendments were approved.
In Beach North Dakota two children aged five and seven were found dead after a rattlesnake concealed in bed clothing killed them. The incident occurred at the home of Dave Grant fourteen miles southeast of Beach after the bedding was aired outdoors.

The Beaver had left Memphis en route to Snakey Bend for a government survey. the steamer Chiska saved five survivors.
