Pittsburgh AP. Robert Michniak 22 stood atop a downtown bridge for about an hour firing at police and wounded himself in the head. The scene was broadcast live as police backed by armored units watched from streets below. He was hospitalized after brain surgery in serious condition. His mother, watching from Ohio, said he had psychiatric problems and had recent health concerns.

Milwaukee man Frederick Peterson 24 and his nine month old son Brian were killed on Highway 20 in a Racine County collision. Injured in the other car were Rosemary Peterson 23 and Vivian Burger 19 of Racine. The Wisconsin 1969 traffic toll rose to 425.
