Get-Rich-Quick Scheme Targeting Milwaukee Lawyers
A Wisconsin Banker article describes a clever swindle by a man named Smith who targeted Milwaukee attorneys in late May. He deposited small sums at banks, used a Canada-lumber-company card, and feigned a divorce settlement with his wife to pressure attorneys into handling a property sale. A forged Columbus Indiana bank letterhead and drafts were used to move about $3,000 to Smith, with fake deeds exchanged through attorneys. The ruse involved timing, phishing letters, and a staged divorce return to complicate ownership of Mrs Smith’s Indiana property. Authorities identified H Griffith as the impostor behind the Columbus Indiana correspondence.
