A late Friday afternoon smoke column appeared over downtown La Crosse and a baby tornado damaged the Tri-State Supply Corp roof and skylight. Wood from the lumber storehouse was torn and debris fell to the ground as workers observed the event.
Conferees near final action on construction provisions of a road bill to authorize a nationwide interstate program. They expect to resolve whether to add 2,500 miles and will then address financing differences before sending the measure to Congress.
The Wisconsin Saenger Bezirk begins a two day session in Mary E Saw yer Auditorium with delegates arriving from La Crosse Manitowoc Merrill Sheboygan and Madison and later from Milwaukee and Chicago. A massed chorus rehearsal is planned for 2 p.m. ahead of a 7 30 p m concert expected to include over 500 singers.
The Wisconsin state office of the Agricultural and Stabilization and Conservation Committee announced clipping or plowing dates for crops on land to join the acreage reserve in the soil bank plan. Meetings for signup likely at county seats or trading centers. Crop dates: wheat rye and canning peas June 30 oats and barley July 10 corn soybeans sorghum and buckwheat July 31.
The State Motor Vehicle Department examined arguments for a point system to penalize motorists for major traffic violations. Commissioner Melvin O. Larson said further study is needed before implementation, with a goal to have the system in place by summer. The 1955 Legislature authorized the project, linking point accumulation to possible driver license loss.
Camp Decorah starts its 33rd summer season with 85 Boy Scouts and seven leaders registered for the first week. James J. The court order seeks temporary and permanent injunctions, citing the Condon-Washlin law and the TA's contract with the Transport Workers Union through December 1957.

Chancellor Konrad Adenauer received an honorary doctor of laws from Marquette University in Milwaukee attended by 4,000. He was initiated as an honorary member of the Consolidated American Indian Tribes and given an authentic Indian headdress and the name Layadnolu. The 80-year-old leader praised U S German ties and noted a lack of beer during his visit, then boarded Lufthansa for Bonn.
SAN FRANCISCO The Air Force said last night the first hydrogen bomb dropped from an American plane missed the Bikini target by about two miles. Brig. Gen. Robert L. Scott Jr. called it a human error and said the memory switch was not turned off before the drop in May. He spoke from Chowchilla, California, at a Rotary Club meeting.
President Eisenhower, nearing one week after major surgery for a partial intestinal obstruction, received a doctors notice to begin nonliquid foods by mouth. He will be fed soft foods such as custard gelatine and cream of wheat later in the day as he rests well and remains in good spirits.
In Superior Wisconsin the Democratic state convention opens as Kefauver’s fading bid for the presidential nomination shifts attention to Harriman and Stevenson. Backers court Wisconsin delegates pledged to Kefauver amid a growing Harriman boom led by local supporters.
Senator Estes Kefauver breakfasted with campaign workers and pledged to win the Democratic presidential nomination. He noted gains by Stevenson in California, and Wisconsin delegates he holds by default. Wisconsin activists discuss possible delegate switches or support for Harriman if Kefauver falters.
Nash, head of Wisconsin Democrats, told 500 delegates at the state convention that Assembly Speaker Mark Catlin Jr. was knocked from the Republican U S Senate race by political assassination. He denounced GOP actions at Milwaukee and endorsed Rep. Glenn R. Davis against Sen. Alexander Wiley.
