Follette Calls Aldrich Tariff Revision a Farce in Interview

Wisconsin Senator La Follette criticizes the tariff revision as an upward shift from the Dingley rates. He notes committee amendments reduce some duties but leave overall increases, with figures showing selective rises and falls across chemical, cotton, flax, and jute imports. He argues the conference report offers little improvement and that the public will face higher costs.

The group debated funding a orphan’s home, a salaried grand lecturer, and a $1 per member assessment to host the conclave in Milwaukee in 1919, with opposition likely to kill these plans.
