States May Not Tax Indians On Reservations
The Supreme Court ruled that the 1953 law granting state civil and criminal jurisdiction over parts of Indian reservations does not authorize states to tax reservation Indians or their property. The unanimous decision, written by Justice Brennan, affects about 100,000 Indians across Alaska California Nebraska Wisconsin Minnesota (excluding Red Lake) and Oregon (excluding Warm Springs). The ruling reversed Minnesota Supreme Court in a case over a $118 mobile home personal property tax for 1972.
