hostile white crowds clashed with Black residents after an assault by six Black youths on an 18 year old white boy who was stabbed 14 times and his 15 year old white companion raped. Local tensions erupted Friday night as rocks were thrown and violence spread through the city.
Washington saw its largest racial march as about 3000 protesters and supporters moved along Pennsylvania Avenue after prayers by the White House. They celebrated progress on housing bias bans and an end to hiring discrimination, while planning a possible Capitol Hill sit-in as Congress debates civil rights. Medgar Evers’ Arlington burial was announced and Attorney General Kennedy faced a delayed appearance before the crowd.
An all white jury in Los Angeles convict nine members of the Black Muslim sect on charges tied to a bullet-spattered riot that left one Black man dead, six others wounded, and seven officers injured on April 27, 1962. Two defendants were acquitted and two more convictions were partial. Sentencing set for July 16. Rev. John Henry Morris and Raymond Dewayne Willey acquitted.
In Jackson Mississippi thousands of mourners, mainly African American, queued at the Negro Masonic Temple to honor slain civil rights leader Medgar Evers. The service featured a flag draped coffin, flower tributes from the NAACP and family, and police on duty as the National Council of Churches called bells to toll nationwide at noon.

A Soviet plan anticipated a female cosmonaut Ludmilla joining in parallel orbit, though dates varied. sources noted her strong testing and potential 24 hour flight.
Governor Reynolds and GOP leaders moved within 8.8 million of a 1963 65 budget deal as the Joint Finance Committee proposed a 622.4 million two year spending plan and debated how to raise 132 to 141 million in new revenues. The plan faces tax and education cuts and a staged faculty pay increase.
Francis B. Schneider of Rice Lake was named president of the Wisconsin chapter of the National Association of Post Masters at the annual convention. Norbert F. Schumerth De Pere Joseph Podruck Elroy Clarence Bodden Theresa and Linda Kison Readfield were named vice presidents with Harold P. Van Bureen Hartland re-elected secretary treasurer.
James L. Faltinek, long time inventory coordinator in private business, is named assistant to the director of continuing education at Marquette University. The announcement was made Friday in Milwaukee.

Gov. John W. Reynolds summoned Democratic leaders to two weekend meetings in Madison and Milwaukee to discuss a 1963 65 budget compromise and a financing plan. The talks aim to bridge GOP GOP Joint Finance Committee figures with Democratic concerns on tax policy and spending.
The White House announced that railroad negotiators and five operating unions agreed to a postponement of the work rules dispute deadline. The strike threat is delayed at least until July 10 as talks resume, following a White House meeting with President Kennedy.
Harold Ristow, La Crosse County Democratic Party chairman, announces candidacy for state party chair. He joins several runners including J. Louis Hanson and Francis Rondeau as delegates prepare to elect next Saturday. Ristow, a La Crosse native and longtime Democrat, cites party principles and open delegate choice.
In Cambridge Maryland the National Guard arrived by order of Governor Tawes and imposed a 9 p.m. curfew on businesses and a 10 p.m. street ban to halt four nights of violence. Civil rights leader Stanley Branch urged residents to clear the streets as guardsmen moved into the Negro district with bayonets ready. Most of the 50 protesters dispersed after the plea.
Selmer Engan 33 and Earl Engan 27 of Spring Grove area died when their car went out of control on County Highway 16 south of Spring Grove. Passenger Robert Rosendahl 22 from Decorah Iowa was treated for bruises. Funeral services for the Air Force veterans set for Big Canoe Lutheran Church with burial in the church cemetery.
Emery T. Filbey, 85, of Elwood Indiana, received his high school diploma at the University of Chicago High School graduation. He left eighth grade 70 years ago and retired as vice president in 1944. He earned the diploma with 130 graduates as the registrar discovered the missing certificate in 1917.
