Flood Control Projects Voted by Common Council Committees
Six flood control measures urged by the mayor’s flood control committee gained favorable action from council committees on Thursday night. Immediate action was asked on one proposal and others require study and cost estimates. The first project plans a force main from Charles and Palace Streets to the Black River to support a permanent storm water pumping station at the site. The board urged fast action because it crosses the planned Highway 53 route and could be installed before the highway fill. The city engineer and mayor also pressed for quick action. Other proposals include a flood gate on the Causeway storm sewer, higher manholes near Riverside Park, and headwalls and flood gates on culverts in the Burlington Railroad right of way. City crews could handle these, with no private contracts. A fifth item calls for portable pumping equipment to aid flood removal, including a survey of existing units to determine need.

Union Shop One Of Four Roadblocks In Steel Settlement
President Philip Murray of the CIO United Steelworkers tells aides the union shop is one of four obstacles blocking a settlement in the twelve day old steel strike. He cites wage policy, seniority, management clauses, and incentive pay alongside the union shop as gridlocked issues. Murray notes Taft and Eisenhower and the Korea situation as context while newsmen are hustled from the room. The strike has slashed steel output for defense and left over 100000 workers idle.
