2-Cent Cigarette Tax Plan Faces State Hearing
Madison Wis The senate approved Morrissey bill to place a two cent tax on each cigarette pack to raise funds for elementary schools drawing opposition from 32 persons at an education committee hearing. Senator Morrissey and Dr Rush Lake said it would raise about 1 000 000 annually and lift teacher pay. Opponents warned small dealers and smokers would bear the burden, affecting small income taxpayers most. The committee deferred a recommendation until the senate acts on the budget bill outlining increased school aids.
