Wisconsin Farmers Oppose Auto Tax Bill

Wise farmer lawmakers argue a proposed two percent tax on automobiles would hit farmers hardest. A $500 car could incur $10 extra tax, a $4500 vehicle $9, but the highway department estimates the measure would raise about 18 million this year and 9 million next year. Farmers note rising ownership of cars among farms from four to five percent, and claim the bill would shift tax burden onto rural motorists while neglecting trucks on highways.
