Fiancee of UW track star found slain in Hollywood
Dr. Walter Deike the 34 year old former Wisconsin and Chicago track star found his fiancée Miss Marjorie Hipperson strangled in her Hollywood apartment in Los Feliz. He reported entering via a rear window after she failed to report for work as a nurse. Police described the victim as garrotted with a nylon stocking and found her nightgown bunched on her shoulders. Deike and Miss Hipperson had planned to marry next week in Chicago. The couple had attended a Sunday engagement shower at Hollywood Presbyterian Hospital where they both worked. Police found no sign of robbery and noted Deike was on hospital on call when notified. The investigation noted Deike’s past as a standout track athlete and NCAA 10,000 meter champion in 1992. Oshkosh State College students dedicated a marker on the grave of sculptress Helen Farnsworth Mears. The Oshkosh native, who created the Genius of Wisconsin figure in the state capitol rotunda, died in 1916 and was buried with an unmarked grave until the campus project.
