Spectacular Paris funeral stirs riot and praise

Paris on June 11 saw the opulent funeral of H. A. Chauchard, Louvre store owner, as thousands crowded the Madonna church. Flowers and orchids covered the hearse, a riot erupted over souvenirs, officials and Fal llieres attended, and a modest bouquet from a distant cousin contrasted with the extravagance. Critics say the display widens class friction while Chauchard had left funds for his funeral and his housekeeper’s bequest drew scandal.
