Washington Republicans weigh how long President Eisenhower stays bedfast after an intestinal ailment and an early morning operation. His recovery pace could determine whether he seeks a second term and impact the November election.
Five La Crosse industries were honored for hiring physically handicapped workers during the 28th annual DAV Wisconsin convention in La Crosse. Awards went to La Crosse Works Allis Chalmers Manufacturing The Electric Auto Lite Co Northern Engraving Manufacturing Co Crusade Inc and Warren Loveland for Crusade Inc The Trane Co received no representative The program featured awards presented by DAV state commander Charles R Kettle andlocal officials amid convention activities at the La Crosse Vocational and Adult Schools and Hotel Stoddard.
The La Crosse Junior Ameri Legion team begins practice on Monday June 11 at 5 30 p m in Memorial Field. Open to senior high boys ages 15 to 17 with eligibility for those born before September 1938.
New York Governor Averell Harriman announced himself an active Democratic presidential candidate. Speaking before 200 delegates at the Hat Workers Union convention he proclaimed the hat in the ring and tossed a gray fedora into the air.
In Madrid a two story building venue collapsed during a post wedding celebration. Seventeen guests were killed and about thirty injured as panicked partygoers tried to flee. The event attracted around one hundred attendees including the bride and groom.
President Eisenhower's doctors said the emergency abdominal operation was a complete success and he can resume limited work early next week. Hagerty reported the President recovering satisfactorily and expected to remain hospitalized with no interruption to duties.

He noted the Soviet Union spends about 20 percent of its gross product on military and foreign aims. Eisenhower endorsed the speech in principle and called it part of waging peace. Dulles also touched on neutrality in a world with shifting alliances.
A Navy jet crashed in flames near Minneapolis airport destroying one house and damaging five others. The pilot Maj George E Armstrong and five other people died. Seven children were burned, five critically. coroner recovered two adult bodies and two more in nearby wreckage. Residents described a muffled explosion followed by widespread flames.
