In Madison the Senate approved a reapportionment bill and moved to a one week recess to shape new budget tax proposals. Gov Reynolds is expected to veto the plan as it does not add Milwaukee Assembly seats.
MADISON AP Gov Reynolds signals openness to a tax compromise but won’t commit to a general sales tax. Over 100 school officials press for a budget and tax plan to protect school aid, while discussions span income and selective sales taxes and earmarks for education. The Joint Finance Committee weighs a budget near 162 million in new revenue as Republicans and the governor seek a workable package.
Spec. 4 Raymond L. Martin Jr. of Affton Missouri was killed when a road grader overturned during a sharp turn at Camp McCoy Wisconsin. Pfc Elmer J Frewer of St Louis Missouri was injured with a shattered left leg and possible internal injuries and transported to Great Lakes Naval Hospital Illinois.
Reports indicate Governor Reynolds and Republican leaders have held five secret meetings with a sixth planned to avert a looming budget tax impasse. They reportedly remain about 30 million dollars apart as they seek a compromise to prevent a fiscal crisis in the state.
The Wisconsin Assembly approved a bill allowing parents to set a minimum beer buying age for their children. The 73 to 20 vote keeps 18 as the base age while youths under 21 would need county clerk issued ID cards with parental consent and possible revocation.

Victims Everett Sherwood and his son Roger both from Richmond Indiana and Robert Keller of New Paris Ohio identified by Dane County police. Another crash killed a nine year old boy, Roger Thom of Trimbelle, Pierce County, struck while bicycling on Highway 10 near his home.
La Crosse County Board awards seven contracts totaling 1,954,494 for a new courthouse and safety building in the civic center. Construction begins June 17 with completion aimed at April 1, 1965. La Crosse firms win four contracts totaling 1,643,349. Peter Nelson and Son secures the 1,197,000 general contract.
Seven youths from Lexington are jailed on open charges after a race riot Thursday night that left one white man dead and a photographer wounded. Police report weapons among the arrestees and note clashes between white residents and Negro protesters near cafes and a theater in the Piedmont town of 18,000.
President Kennedy will hold informal talks with British Prime Minister Harold Macmillan in Sussex on June 29 during his European trip after visiting Ireland, then continuing to Italy on June 30. They last met in the Bahamas in December to discuss a multinational NATO nuclear force including Polaris missiles.
Madison AP report notes a bill to ban sale of most household detergents in Wisconsin was returned to the Senate without recommendation by the Joint Finance Committee after waning support since a prior hearing. The Assembly considered an interim study proposal on county board representation by David Martin, with another measure approving uniform thread fittings on fire fighting hoses within five years.
The La Crosse Tribune helped Cutler-Hammer develop a field tested ink mist suppressor for high speed presses. A stainless wire applies a negative charge near the ink roller nip, repelling ink mist back onto the roller. The Tribune press room hosted 36 months of testing with fast presses aiding a safer cleaner production environment.
