Wisconsin Senate Hears Veterans Housing and Rent Control Issues
The Wisconsin Senate approved the Laird Lenroot veterans housing bill directing 30 percent of the housing fund for grants and 70 percent for direct loans, amid GOP backing and Democratic opposition. A rent control bill would end state controls by June 1940, with allows for 15 to 30 percent increases interim, pitting Republicans against Democrats and signaling a political battle in next year's elections. Governor Rennebohm backs local option decontrol, while federal rulings and possible state court decisions loom over local control debates. The outcome hinges on Assembly action, potential gubernatorial vetoes, and ongoing pressure from veterans groups and housing authorities.
