The Labor Department reports unemployment fell from 7.5 to 7.3 percent in May as wholesale price increases slowed to 0.3 percent. Employment rose by 300,000 to 87.7 million, with 6.9 million jobless, and average earnings up six cents to 4.83 dollars per hour.
The Common Council Finance and Purchase Committee voted 4 to 1 to release 1.41 million in 1976 capital improvement funds to buy the 29 acre site for a new North Side High School and to hire architects. Critics urged more study of site bounds and future growth before final approval.
The Justice Department considers filing a civil suit to recover public funds paid to Elizabeth Ray as Hays mistress. Described as in fair condition, he was handed to Sudanese officials in Khartoum and will undergo medical checks in Frankfurt before returning home. His sister from Mabel, Minnesota, reunited with him in Sudan.
