Senators support the railroad bill with many amendments defeated by regulars as the measure clears the Senate. Supporters call it a step forward while hoping objectionable features will be removed by future amendments. The bill aims to create a court of commerce to handle interstate commerce cases.
La Follette captained the opposition in a heated Senate battle as all Republicans supported the bill while 12 Democrats opposed it. He argued Taft direction favored railroads with only four public provisions and outlined 16 amendments he forced into the measure.
Law will be the hardest to swallow by progressive senators. Debate centers on necessity and constitutionality of a proposed commerce court for railroads. Critics warn of six watered stock issuance paths and potential railroad control, while some provisions aim to curb rates and protect shippers with court appeals and passes for families of railroad victims.

Lorenz Hafner, a longtime South Ridge resident, died at his home at 2 45 in the afternoon. He was 81, had been in poor health for two years, and survived by four sons Felix Frank Lorenz Jr and John all of South Ridge and daughters Mrs G Engstler Union Minn and Mrs Mary Hilby East Dubuque. The funeral is set for Monday at St Josephs Cathedral with burial in the Catholic cemetery.
