An American container ship and a Belgian tanker collided near the Verrazano Narrows Bridge causing a massive fire. At least seven people died including the Sea Witch captain William Patterson of Clifton New Jersey. Four crewmen from the two ships are missing and more than 20 of 68 survivors were injured.
Sheikh Mohammed Ali Othman, member of North Yemen’s Republican Council, was killed by bazooka fire outside his Taiz home. Authorities say assailants came from South Yemen amid ongoing border clashes. A December peace accord ended heavy fighting in the region.
The American military adviser Lt Col Lewis Hawkins 42 of Plymouth Indiana was killed by a terrorist outside his Tehran residence and a motorcyclist fled the scene. Iranian police deployed guards at American sites and seven leftist guerrillas await trial for a 1971 kidnapping attempt on U S Ambassador Douglas MacArthur and wife. Hawkins is survived by his widow Annett and three sons Terry Ronald and Lee.
Three convicted Watergate figures E Howard Hunt Bernard L Barker and Eugenio Martinez await temporary release from Danbury Conn to testify before a Los Angeles grand jury investigating the Ellsberg psychiatrist office burglary The disclosures come from Archibald Cox and Samuel Cash amid Senate Watergate probes and related indictments in Florida involving Donald Segretti and a phony campaign letter bids in 1972.

They received $50,000 from SAM in Aruba and released several passengers and crew along the way. Captain Hugo Molina described their erratic route and threatened crew before resuming control of the plane.
